Local Mom Dazzles, Promotes Confidence in Children

Her Hazelwood business helps raise kids' self-esteem with diva makeovers, photo shoots and runway struts.

It may seem like glitz and glamour when you enter the doors of Dazzling Divas at St. Louis Mills, but the runways and cameras are there and ready to help children find their confidence. Marilyn Diggs, a mother and grandmother, decided to start Dazzling Divas as a nod to the girls and young women she serves. Diggs uses her own creativity and a fun, feminine environment to help her customers see themselves as strong and beautiful. "Our main focus is to teach children self-esteem, teaching them how to feel good about themselves and having fun at the same time," Diggs said. "After the children are finished modeling on the stage, they have so much confidence." Research backs the concept Anita Gurian said in her research that the loss of self-…

An international recycling company is collecting used flip-flops at all Old Navy clothing stores through May 21. The flip-flops will come out on the other end as ground covering for public playgrounds—those rubber-like surfaces that save teeth, knees and arms when children take a fall. Betsy King, the district manager for Old Navy in the St. Louis region, said that four playgrounds will be built and filled with the recycled flip-flops. King said there's no word yet on which communities those playgrounds will be built in. TerraCycle Inc., an international company that turns hard-to-recycle items into eco-friendly products, has partnered with Old Navy for the flip-flop drive, which they're calleing "ReFlip, ReFlop, ReCycle." They say it's …
