The National Retail Federation released its annual holiday shopping forecast. Americans are shopping earlier than ever, the survey shows, which could lead to a 4.1 percent increase in national sales.
Accustomed to pinching pennies thanks to years of economic downturn, holiday shoppers this year will look for ways to cut corners, comparative shop online and even plan to travel less, if not at all, the National Retail Federation said in its annual shopping forecast for the Christmas season. On average, the NRF expects holiday consumers to spend $749.51 on holiday gifts, decor, greeting cards and more in 2012. That's more than the $740.57 shoppers actually spent in 2011. And before you think Hazelwood Patch is reporting on the holiday season, think again. According to the survey, nearly half of Americans say they've begun holiday shopping before Halloween—12.3 percent of those surveyed before September; 7 percent during September; and 22…

I had no idea when I wrote that question that so many would have opinions on North County business staples. On Wednesday I asked Facebook fans and Twitter followers which Hazelwood and North County businesses they couldn't live without and there were quite a few opinions. Like Hazelwood Patch on Facebook and join our discussions in real time! Michele Schindler-Bauer said she can't live without Cose Dolce bakery in Ferguson. "Best. Chocolate. Cupcakes. Ever," she said. Schindler-Bauer also noted Ferguson Brewing Company, de.lish Cheesecake Bakery and Cafe in Florissant, and Hair Express in Hazelwood. "Kathy Cafazza is the greatest hair stylist," she said. With Nov. 26 being Small Business Saturday, some Hazelwood business are preparing their promotions.
Hazelwood small businesses are gearing up and no, it's not for Black Friday. Across the country Nov. 26 is dedicated to the small businesses helping keep the economy afloat with Small Business Saturday. Last year as Small Business Saturday approached, Strini's Jewelers, a family-owned store located at Elm Grove Plaza on Lindbergh, said it takes a more traditional approach when it comes to bringing in business. When interviewed last year, owner Ray Strini told Patch he avoids fads in …

Conversation Pieces owner Casaundra Bronner's passion is creating tasty, edible works of art.
Not long after InBev bought St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, Hazelwood resident and single mom Casaundra Bronner found herself out of a job. As the company was being reorganized, Bronner’s position in the marketing department was eliminated. Bronner had worked at Anheuser-Busch for 11 years. Shortly before her position was eliminated, she decided to go back to school. She earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Phoenix in 2007, and in May of 2011, she earned her master’s degree in management from Fontbonne University. During the time she was working toward her master’s degree, her mother suggested that since she was technically unemployed and “getting all these degrees,” she should use the knowledge she was gaining …

If you're planning an event, this local business promises to make it spectacular.
Are you planning a big event in the near future? Maybe you’re getting married, or you’re planning to throw a special party for your favorite kid. In any case, one Hazelwood company says it has you covered in a very elegant way. Owner Sharonda Ellis has been an event coordinator and professional event decorator for six years. She grew up in Florissant and graduated from Hazelwood East High School. Her husband Charles is a Hazelwood West graduate, though Ellis said they didn’t meet until college. "We're still in the newlywed phase," she said. "We've been married for two years." Ellis has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Missouri and is a member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority. In 2009, Ellis decided she was done working …

This jewel of a place located on the Hazelwod-Florissant border offers tons to guests.
Most people don’t associate the words “you’re fired” with positivity and joy but for Rebecca Frank, that’s exactly what she does. “You’re Fired!” is her contemporary pottery studio. Slightly hidden and nestled in a strip mall off Howdershell Road, the “paint a piece” studio offers customers the opportunity to channel their inner artists and only be hindered by their own imaginations. Katie Doering has lost count of how many times she’s been to “You’re Fired!.” Her favorite project thus far was making Christmas mugs for her family members. She asked members to pick their three favorite colors and chose a theme. Then she got pictures off the internet that matched the theme and traced them onto the mugs. “Everyone loved the mugs,” Doering …
