Photos: Hazelwood Community Contributes to Scouting for Food in a Big Way

Local scouts helped collect more than 2 million cans of food across the state--and in North County.

Hazelwood Cub Scouts were among the 30,000 Missouri Boy Scouts who participated in the 28th annual Scouting for Food event recently. “Scouts and their leaders put out 1.4 million bags in Missouri,” North Star District Communications Chairman Fred Schaljo told Patch last week. “More than 500 food pantries rely on Scouting for Food and the generosity of the community to help stock their shelves before the holiday season and the cold winter months.” Schaljo added Scouting for Food donations provide up to a four-month supply for some pantries. “Scouts are taught the value of helping others with this program,” he said. “Since the program started 27 years ago, 4.5 million cans have been collected.” This year, scouts fromn the Greater St. Louis …

Scouting for Food: Boy Scouts Pick Up in Hazelwood Saturday

The 28th annual drive will come to a close on Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. when scouts canvas area neighborhoods to retrieve bags dropped off last Saturday.

Did you get a Scouting for Food bag placed on your mailbox or doorstep last week by a local boy scout? If so, you’ve still got time to fill it—but not much. The bags will be picked up on Saturday morning around Hazelwood, according to the scouts’ North Star District Communications Chairman Fred Schaljo. What You Need to Do to Donate Schaljo said that anyone wishing to donate should place their filled Scouting for Food bags outside their homes in plain sight by 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. Collection will begin at 10, he said. If your bag hasn’t been picked up by 1 p.m., or if you didn’t receive a bag and want to donate, you can call Mark Hays 314-550-4233. Hazelwood Scouts Help Feed the Hungry

Cub scouts from Armstrong and Garrett elementary schools gathered on Saturday to collect food donations for Scouting for Food.

Hazelwood Cub Scouts from Armstrong and Garrett elementary schools, members of Cub Scout Pack 736, participated in a nationwide effort to help feed local hungry families on Saturday. Scouting for Food, the largest one-day food drive held by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), was first started in 1985 here in the St. Louis area. Since then, BSA’s Greater St. Louis Area Council reports that more than 43 million food items have been collected over the years to help feed the poor and hungry in the area. The food collected on Saturday is expected to feed local people for four months, according to BSA. “I didn’t know that some people can’t afford to buy food,” said Hazelwood scout Noah Atkinson. “I feel sorry for them, but it makes me feel good to…
