HSD Has Officers at All Secondary Schools, Continues Talks with Local Law Enforcement

The Hazelwood School District spends more than $600,000 a year on school resource officers for all of its high schools and all of its middle schools. Before the start of the New Year, Northwest Middle School did not have an officer.

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) has a significant investment in its student's safety. In a recent article about the NRA wanting armed officers in every American school, it was mentioned that hiring police to patrol schools falls on the each individual district. Police Presence For the 2012-13 school year the HSD school resource officer budget for salaries is $618,793.  And in some cases like with Hazelwood Schools, depending on the various municipalities, the cost is split, with HSD paying a percentage and the police departments paying a percentage, Diana Gulotta, HSD's assistant superintendent for communications said. As of the start of the New Year a senior resource officer began having a presence at Hazelwood Northwest Middle School…

Following Rumors of Violence, HSD Schools Let Out Safely for Christmas Holiday

Hazelwood School District received reports from parents of rumors of threats of possible violence, which led the district to be on high alert.

The victims and community of Newtown, Conn. were warm on the hearts of students and staff when the district made headlines of its own. First, a bullet was found randomly laying on the floor at Hazelwood West Middle School. The district then met about its lock down policy, of which it plans to discuss revamping in the New Year. The week then ended with the district on high alert after rumors of some violence occurring on Friday caught wind. "As you know, the tragedy in Newtown has created anxiety in people across the country." Diana Gulotta, superintendent for communications said in an email to parents. This is great, but what the district needs to do is treat the elementary and middle schools like they do the high schools and have an armed officer there in the front stopping those that walk through the front doors.   more ›

NRA Issues Statement On Newtown School Shooting

The organization, which held its annual convention in St. Louis this year, plans a "major" news conference Friday in Washington, D.C.

The national conversation taking place in the wake of the Newtown, CT school shootings Friday has thus far not included the advocacy group for gun rights, the National Rifle Association. It has remained quiet as people demand gun reform. That changed Tuesday afternoon with a statement sent to reporters around the country: "The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown. Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful …

I don't think it's about gun reform I think it's about who you allow to have a gun. Strengthen the regulations. If a person is clinically diagnosed with mental illness, why are they getting these weapons?   more ›

Do We Need A Ban on Assault Rifles?

In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, the owner of a military and law enforcement supply store in Chesterfield says such laws and regulations won't solve the problem.

The tragic death of 20 children and six adults in Connecticut at the hands of a heavily armed gunman has ignited a national debate about gun control, specifically the access of private citizens to military-grade gear.  A federal ban on assault rifles passed in 1994 under Bill Clinton expired in 2004 and now many gun control advocates are calling for it to be reinstated, but Chesterfield resident Chad Weinman and CEO of TacticalGear.com says that won't solve the problem.  The online company has a brick-and-mortar facility located on Edison Road in Chesterfield and primarily sells clothing and equipment such as holsters, vests and dynamic entry tools commonly used by tactical law enforcement teams or military personnel, but not firearms or …

Should Local Teachers Pack Pistols?

Teachers in Texas carry guns to protect students. Will pressure to do so swell in the Show-Me State?

One local gun advocate believes it indeed is possible for teachers to handle guns inside school buildings. But area resident Marc Perez said anyone who carries a firearm must assume a certain degree of responsibility.  "In a 'crowd' like a school for a teacher, a significant, professional and extensive additional training would be required for a teacher to carry a firearm," he said. "Once an intruder enters a school with the intent to do harm, the police are minutes away while the threat may begin within seconds. "The math does not add up." Perez said there are instructors available with the proper credentials to give such training in the St. Louis metropolitan area. As a National Rifle Association Certified Range Safety Officer, Perez …

I agree M. Royal but when I said they feel threatened, it meant due to appearance and not because they are an actual threat. You have programs where if a teacher goes to an inner city school they can have student loans cleared. It sounds great but people don't always think it through. If someone who has never been in the environment participates, but is completely intimidated by the appearance of…   more ›
