Municipal election season is upon us and Hazelwood Patch is gearing up to bring you the best local election coverage possible.  Local elections are April 3. There is no election this year for City of Hazelwood council seats. The mayor's position is up, but only the incumbent Mayor Matthew Robinson filed for re-election. There are two spots open on the Hazelwood School District Board of Education and both incumbents, along with one newcomer have filed. The candidate are: Mark Behlmann, Keith Boykin Sr. and Deriree Whitlock. Curry Brings Fresh Perspective, Inner Knowledge of Schools to HSD Board of Education

School board candidate Nita Curry wants to increase rigor of classes and improve North County's image.

Nita Curry said she couldn’t hold a candle to one candidate when it came to academic degrees and accomplishments--two of her opponents are former principals in the Hazelwood School District (HSD). But Curry, 48, said she does bring something the Hazelwood School District Board of Education needs the most. “I walk the halls, I know the teachers, I see things that students are dealing with,” said Curry, a past PTA president for Russell Elementary School and current substitute teacher in several HSD schools. She is also on the district’s technology advisory and scholarship committees. “I feel like what I’m bringing to the table is a totally new, fresh perspective,” she said. Youngblood Wants to Focus on Student Achievement, Work Force Readiness

This board of education candidate was Hazelwood School District principal for 22 years.

Brenda Youngblood said her priorities are improving student performance and helping students to be active members of the future workforce. Youngblood is one of four candidates running for three seats on the Hazelwood School District's Board of Education in the April 5 election. The others are Ann Gibbons, Charles “Chuck” Woods and Nita Curry. Gibbons and Woods are incumbents. A third incumbent, Diane Dowdy, decided not to seek re-election. Youngblood served in the district for 22 years as a principal at Keeven and McCurdy elementary schools. She worked for the Hazelwood School District for 37 years all together. Gibbons Wants to Focus on Raising Student Achievement, Test Scores

Ann Gibbons is one of four candidates in the race for three Hazelwood School District Board of Education seats.

Ann Gibbons said the Hazelwood School District’s (HSD) main priority should be obvious. During a recent candidate forum, Gibbons said the district must improve on teaching reading, math and science because that’s what the state testing and accreditation process focuses on. “We have to bring up the test scores of the kids who score below the state average on the MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) tests,” Gibbons said. “We don’t have any accreditation problems right now, but you can’t coast along, resting on your laurels. HSD Board of Education Approves 2011-12 School Year Calendar at Tuesday's Meeting

Other agenda items include first reading of a revised student guidance and counseling policy, and approval of issuance of Proposition H general obligation bonds.

The Hazelwood School District Board of Education approved the 2011-12 calendar year schedule during its last meeting of 2010. Dwight Lindhorst, assistant superintendent for finance and facilities, explained that the upcoming school year's calendar was modified to reflect spread-out teacher development days. Lindhorst said parents have expressed concern with student days off being too close together. "The new calendar also reflects less half days as parents were concerned about finding child care for students on early dismissal days," he said. Political Filings Opened Tuesday, April Election Not Far Away

The 2011 election season kicked off Tuesday when election filing opened for municipal and school board elections. Find out who some potential politicians are for Hazelwood.

Tuesday marked the start of the 2011 election season as filings opened for municipal, school board and fire district elections. City of Hazelwood Clerk, Colleen Wolf, said that filings began the morning of Dec. 14 at 8a.m. She said she didn't expect a large crowd of people coming in to file throughout the month span. "All incumbents have picked up petitions to file," she said. "So far no other residents have picked up packets (to file for city council)." Wards 2, 4, 6 and 8 council seats are up for the April 5 election. That means council members Robert Aubuchon, Mike Conley, Warren (Butch) Taylor and Mary Singleton all have to file for re-election to retain their council seats.
