Only people living with the stench from the Bridgeton Landfill will be able to say whether the smell is alleviated. Attorney General Chris Koster says Republic will fix the odor spreading from the landfill, and its subsurface fire by Memorial Day.

The Agreement The agreement asks for the company to finish construction work that would ultimately place a cap on the south quarry of Bridgeton Landfill by Labor Day, pending weather problems. It also calls for temporary relocation of residents of Spanish Village, Terrisan Reste Mobile Home Park and some residences of the Carrollton Village Condominiums and reimbursement of state agencies for ongoing monitoring and sampling efforts. With stir of a possible settlement, complaints of the landfill's odor grows and range from Hazelwood to as far as St. Charles.
The Missouri Coalition for the Environment and residents of Maryland Heights and Bridgeton gathered Monday morning to press officials for more information on the Bridgeton and West Lake landfills. With more construction scheduled to start at the site May 20 and the Bridgeton Landfill odor expected to increase, residents and the coalition want more action from state agencies. Ed Smith, Safe Energy Director for the coalition, showed that Republic Services, owner of the landfills, currently only offers to relocate residents in Spanish Village, Terrisan Reste Mobile Home and some of Carrolton Village Condominiums, which are within a one-mile radius. Smith and others said the “stink zone” is much greater than one mile. “If Republic Services’ …

Some Bridgeton residents are being offered a temporary housing alternative, while the community grows concerns about the landfill's odor.
As the Bridgeton Landfill prepares to have a higher odor level due to further construction, some residents surrounding the area are getting a temporary way out. Residents of Spanish Village, Terrisan Reste Mobile Home and some of Carrolton Village Condominiums have been offered a temporary alternative housing solution as the smell is expected to rise dramatically next week when more construction takes place. In a letter from Bridgeton Landfill President Tim Trost, the company offers a lodging program that will put up residents in an extended-stay hotel at the company’s expense for May 20 through June 14. Pets can be taken to some of the hotels, and pet fees would be covered. If a resident decides to go to a friend or relative’s home …

The installation of reinforced concrete pipes will create a strong odor during the construction this week.
Bridgeton-area residents and employees might smell a stronger stench in the area, and there’s a reason for it. This week, the Bridgeton Landfill will install reinforced concrete pipes, which will cause the stronger odor from the landfill, according to a Missouri Department of Natural Resources website. The construction, which will take place through the end of April depending on weather, is a step in the process to cap the quarry area. Republic Services, which owns this landfill as well as the West Lake Landfill, announced in January that the company had an interceptor plan, which would install gas wells to help with the subsurface heat and address the smells. Since that time, the company has gone through a number of steps involving …

Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Radel said there will be zero-tolerance for similar events in the future.
A little less than one month ago, flames engulfed Repubic Services recycling center in the City of Hazelwood. The Hazelwood Fire Department (HFD) rushed in along with backup from more than four neighboring fire districts to calm the fire, where it was determined mounds of trash piled around the recycling center are what fueled the three-alarm fire. The smoked has cleared, but unfortunately, a conclusive cause for the fire cannot be determined, according to Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Radel. "Some fires are just not going to have a cause," he said. "When we arrived it was about containing the fire. "When you dump hundreds of metric tons of water on piles of paper and plastic it’s going to be difficult to go back through and uncover a source…

On Saturday, Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Radel said too much recycling product was located outside of sprinklered areas at the facility, which caught fire threatening AmeriGas Propane located next door.
The Hazelwood Fire Department with help from more than five neighboring fire districts was able to contain a blaze at Republic Services on Saturday, despite temperatures in the '90s and lots of combustable material. Although no source has been identified for the fire, Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Radel said he plans to speak with Republic Services management about violations that could have made for an uglier situation. “They seem to have a lot more product surrounding the outside of the building, outside of the sprinklered area than they normally would have so that’s something we’re gonna be talking about with management here Monday morning I’m sure,” Chief Radel told Betsey Bruce of KTVI Fox 2 News on Saturday. Radel indicated several …

The Hazelwood Fire Department, along with Robertson Fire Protection District, and fire districts including Florissant, Pattonville, Ferguson, and Berkeley fought a fire at a recycling plant begining around 3 p.m. Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Radel sounded three alarms bringing in three aerial trucks and extra man power because of 90-degree temperatures on Saturday. The biggest concern was ensuring the fire didn't spread next door to AmeriGas propane company. Mounds of trash piled around the recycling center are said to be what fueled the fire.
