Hazelwood West Loses to Pattonville in Extra Inning Thriller

The Pirates survive marathon ballgame against the Wildcats in an early-season Suburban North Conference showdown, thanks to senior Matt Wilkes' ninth-inning, game-winning double.

Just about every time one of the teams from Pattonville High School squares off against one of the teams from Hazelwood West High School, no matter what the sport, there's a pretty good chance the result is going to be some kind of dynamite athletic competition, that won't be decided until the game's final moments. Automatic Rivalry That's what happened when the Pirates and Wildcats met in boys and girls basketball, football, soccer, and swimming this year. So it should be no surprise that on Thursday afternoon, at West's Beckemeier Baseball Field, the teams waged another fantastic battle in their longtime athletic rivalry. And this time, it was the Pirates who came out on top, claiming a nine-inning, 5-4 victory over the Wildcats, in a …

The game went two extra innings, with both teams having chances to win it in either of the extra frames. In the end the Pirates came out on top, claiming a nine-inning, 5-4 victory over the Wildcats, but not without some great plays and hits from both teams. Check out the photos to see what we're talking about. Can the Wildcats take it all the way and end up on top in Suburban North Conference play?

CHESTERFIELD – The MSHSAA district playoffs began with a bang and a bang-out, for the Hazelwood West High School boys and girls basketball teams Monday afternoon at Parkway Central High School. Wildcat Boys Battle Pattonvile The Wildcat boys enjoyed a convincing 71-51 win over Suburban North Conference rival Pattonville, while the West girls, due in part to some questionable officiating calls late in the fourth quarter, saw their season come to an end with a 51-46 loss to Parkway Central. Seniors T.J. Ross and Kane Ledguies were the big stars in the boys win, as Ross led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, including several spectacular driving layups, and Ledguies added 17 points, sparked by a career-high five three-pointers. “It was a…

Hazelwood West Soccer Takes Back-to-Back Suburban North Titles with 3-0 Win Over Pattonville

The win against the Pirates on Friday means the Wildcats go unbeaten in league play for the second straight year.

The Hazelwood West High School boys soccer team reached one of its primary goals of the season Friday afternoon when it completed an unbeaten season in Suburban North Conference play. The Wildcats won their second straight league title, thanks to a 3-0 win over rival Pattonville High School. “I’m really proud of what these guys did out here this season,” said West's coach Jason Sellers. “We’ve been on a good roll.”   And it’s getting close to becoming a decade-long roll for the Wildcats, who have won the Suburban North boys soccer championship six times in the last eight years under Sellers. During that time, West has been nearly unbeaten against conference opponents, winning all but five games in eight years and winning all but two in the…

Hazelwood West Breaks Out The Big Bats In Softball Win Over Pattonville

West’s Kelsey Donahue outpitches Pattonville’s Skyler Rodgers in 14-3 Wildcats win.

To say Hazelwood West junior softball player Kelsey Donahue’s pitching motion is “awkward” is a bit of an understatement. Donahue, who has developed into one of the regular starting pitchers for the Wildcats in this, her second season as a varsity player, has more herks and jerks in her windup and pitch sequence than most anybody has ever seen in any one pitcher. At times, it even looks painful as Donahue wretches and heaves her body through every pitch she tosses. But awkward as it is, it does produce results. And on Tuesday afternoon, in a critical Suburban North Conference game against rival Pattonville, Donahue’s motion was an absolute thing of beauty, as she led tossed five strong innings to lead the Wildcats to a 14-3 win over the …
