'School Gun-Free Zones Paint Big Targets'

With a bullet found at West Middle and in the wake of the Newtown tragedy, an area firearms instructor says it's time those licensed to concealed and carry that work at schools to have guns available.

Friday's mass shooting in a Newtown, CT, elementary school prompted many discussions this weekend regarding whether school staffs now should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon (CCW). Hazelwood parents may feel even more anxous as a bullet was found at Hazelwood West Middle School on Monday. Administration says it is actively investigating the incident. Greg and Loni Pugh teach firearms handling and safety every day from their privately owned and operated business called St. Louis CCW. Guns Need to be in Schools. "I believe we saw the answer on Friday," Greg said. "They give people who are intent to do harm a government guarantee that they will be the only ones with a gun in our schools. Do We Need A Ban on Assault Rifles?

In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, the owner of a military and law enforcement supply store in Chesterfield says such laws and regulations won't solve the problem.

Should Local Teachers Pack Pistols?

Teachers in Texas carry guns to protect students. Will pressure to do so swell in the Show-Me State?

One local gun advocate believes it indeed is possible for teachers to handle guns inside school buildings. But area resident Marc Perez said anyone who carries a firearm must assume a certain degree of responsibility.  "In a 'crowd' like a school for a teacher, a significant, professional and extensive additional training would be required for a teacher to carry a firearm," he said. "Once an intruder enters a school with the intent to do harm, the police are minutes away while the threat may begin within seconds. "The math does not add up." Perez said there are instructors available with the proper credentials to give such training in the St. Louis metropolitan area. As a National Rifle Association Certified Range Safety Officer, Perez …

I agree M. Royal but when I said they feel threatened, it meant due to appearance and not because they are an actual threat. You have programs where if a teacher goes to an inner city school they can have student loans cleared. It sounds great but people don't always think it through. If someone who has never been in the environment participates, but is completely intimidated by the appearance of…   more ›
