Army National Guardsman Gains Honors While Deployed to the Middle East

Sgt. Zachary Flaxbeard was recently named runner up in the 2012 “Best Warrior” Non-commissioned Officer/Soldier of the Year Competition for the Third Army’s U.S. Central Command.

Sgt. Zachary Flaxbeard is a chemical operations specialist with a decontamination unit based at Jefferson Barracks. Right now he is serving at Camp As Sayliyah in Qatar. A St. Louis Army National Guardsman, he continues to rack up honors while deployed to the Middle East. Flaxbeard was recently named runner up in the 2012 “Best Warrior” Non-commissioned Officer/Soldier of the Year Competition for the Third Army’s U.S. Central Command at Camp Buehring, Kuwait. He was one of eight soldiers whose unites chose them to compete in the four-day event.  “It’s a win-win situation for the competitor and the Army,” said Command Sgt. Greatest Person: Hazelwood Resident's Son Named Battalion Soldier of the Quarter

Sgt. Zachary T. Flaxbeard, who is currently deployed to the Middle East, is the Greatest Person of the Day. He said he has learned what it means to serve a cause much larger than himself.

Sgt. Zachary Flaxbeard is a chemical operations specialist with a decontamination unit based at Jefferson Barracks. Right now he is serving at Camp As Sayliyah in Qatar. When Flaxbeard first joined the National Guard, it was to take advantage of the college tuition assistance program. After serving more than five years and being deployed to Afghanistan as a heavy weapons gunner, his focus shifted. "I really gathered an understanding of what it means to serve a cause much larger than myself,” he said. “I have come to love giving back to and supporting our nation, its interests, and the people."
