Missouri Mercantile Closing its Hazelwood Doors

The retailer's lease is up at St. Louis Outlet Mall at the end of February. St. Charles will be its new home.

There is nothing like buying local, supporting the local economy and local businesses. Sadly, one Hazelwood business that is as local as local gets will be closing its doors at the end of February. Bill Olwig, Missouri Mercantile's owner made the tough decision to close after a lot of deliberation, he said. "It's been a rough last couple of years at the mall," Olwig said. "I thought it was the economy but since it looks like things have gotten better with the economy, I'm not seeing an improvement with sales." Missouri Mercantile's location at St. Louis Outlet Mall in the City of Hazelwood doesn't make the best fit for a store as such, Olwig said. Let's help our local businesses, services and nonprofits by nominating them for the Patch Readers' Choice best of St. Louis categories. Nominations close July 9.

Patch readers have the chance to spotlight favorite services, restaurants, businesses, activities and entities through the Patch Readers' Choice contest launched Monday. A total of 25 "best of" contest categories give many Hazelwood entities the opportunity to be nominated. So far 15 businesses have been nominated. See the chart below for the list of businesses. Located in St. Louis Mills Mall, this specialty shop showcases the best Missouri has to offer.

Looking for that hard-to-find local jam or jelly? Are you in desperate need of unique salsas, seasonings and sauces? Missouri Mercantile is the place to go to solve all of your troubles. This specialty shop, located in the St. Louis Mills Mall here in Hazelwood carries numerous varieties of wines, sausages, hand-made cheeses, pickles, honeys and more. What do all of these items have in common? They are all made by Missouri artisans and growers. Missouri Mercantile originated in 2002 in Old Town Florissant, when owner Bill Olwig decided to open a shop that sold nothing but Missouri products.
