Fosdick Cousins Lead Hazelwood West to the Top of Suburban North Conference

Known better for their pitching talents, cousins Brendan and Jared Fosdick have also been dynamite at the plate for the Wildcats this season.

Winning on the baseball diamond has become a family affair at Hazelwood West High School. Head coach Matt McClellan is the brother of St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Kyle McClellan, who also attended Hazelwood West and graduated in 2002. Last year's star player was Trevor Jones, a speedy outfielder and two-time all-conference selection for the Wildcats, just like his older brother Nate was a few years ago. And this season, it's a pair of cousins, Brendan and Jared Fosdick, that has led Hazelwood West to a 7-4 record and to within a half-game of first place in the Suburban North Conference standings this season. "It's great having them on the team," McClellan said. "They're an important part of what we do, and they're good leaders for …

Good news, Cardinals fans! There’s a high-priced, power-hitting, first baseman on the way. Not to play for St. Louis. Instead, Patch users young and old can tap into the expertise of New York Yankees star Mark Teixeira, who has been named “Commissioner of Patch Baseball.” Teixeira, a four-time Gold Glove winner and two-time All-Star, will interact with Patch users by regularly responding to questions, sharing baseball tips, and posting exclusive videos. Teixeira will also offer young athletes advice on how to stay in shape and why healthful eating is so important for optimal performance. “I live in a Patch town now and I keep tabs on my original hometown via the Patch site there, so I’ve seen the ways that Patch supports its communities,” …

Since I went to high school with Kyle, I'd say that he'd make a good 'Patch' commissioner for the Cards.   more ›

Could Kyle McClellan Be Headed Out of St. Louis?

The sports world is talking, and reports that the St. Louis Cardinals are shopping around the right-handed reliever. Orioles at the top of the list of prospects.

Last month Hazelwood Patch reported the St. Louis Cardinals avoided arbitration with home grown pitcher and Hazelwood West High School alum Kyle McClellan, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. Now it seems that the right-handed relief pitcher could possibly be calling another team home come the start of the season. The MLB Daily Dish is reporting the Baltimore Orioles are looking at McClellan, along with bringing back Koji Uehara from the Texas Rangers. McClellan began 2011 as a starter. He was moved back to the bullpen after the team acquired Edwin Jackson. McClellan's stats on ESPN show that he went 12-7 with a 4.19 ERA, had 76 strikeouts and 43 walks in 141.2 innings. A surplus of right-handed relievers in Eduardo …

Hazelwood West's McClellan Works Out a One Year Deal to Remain a Cardinal

Financial terms of the deal have not been released, but MLB.com reports it's worth around $2.5 million.

The Cardinals avoided arbitration with pitcher and Hazelwood West High School alum Kyle McClellan last week, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal. The next step would have been to exchange arbitration figures. The value of the contract was not disclosed, MLB.com is reporting that it is worth approximately $2.5 million. This is the 27-year-old's second time being eligible for arbitration. During last season in which he helped the Cardinals make it to the World Series, he pitched as both a starter and a reliever. Fatigue led to McClellan being on the bench during World Series play as manager Tony La Russa excluded him from the rosters. McClellan's stats on ESPN show that he went 12-7 with a 4.19 ERA, had 76 strikeouts and 43 walks in 141.2 …

SLABA: Local Youth Baseball Organization Thriving

Area St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association team the American National Eagles plays home games at the Hazelwood Sports Complex, and draws Hazelwood School District players.

There was once a time around St. Louis when American Legion baseball was the standard for summer action on the diamond. With the rise of traveling “select” teams over the past decade, Legion baseball has lost some of its luster. Despite these select teams drawing more and more players, often for a hefty fee, one organization that remains as strong as ever is the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association. “The talent level is as high as it’s ever been,” said Bill Becher, the director and head coach of both the American National Eagles 17- and 18-and-under teams. “It’s just spread around over more teams.” The Eagles, a team that calls the Hazelwood Sports Complex home field, draws players from the Hazelwood, McCluer, Parkway North, Ritenour and…

St. Louis Cardinals Invade Hazelwood

Hazelwood West 2002 alum, Kyle McClellan, brings Adam Wainwright out to The Fieldhouse Summer Baseball Camp at the Hazelwood Sports Complex.

Baseballs, baseball caps, bats, team shirts and baseball cards are just a few items that come to mind when thinking about summer baseball. But for children from Hazelwood and beyond, Friday afforded them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet some St. Louis Cardinals players, and have those items autographed. Pitchers Kyle McClellan and Adam Wainwright came out to the The Fieldhouse Summer Baseball Camp at the Hazelwood’s Sports Complex, where in an intimate session, they answered questions, signed autographs and much more. More than 50 children, 5 - 7-years-old, were present participating in this year's summer camp. Kyle said he makes appearances at the baseball camp "as a way of giving something back to his hometown community." In a …

Hazelwood West Baseball Takes Fourth at Fort Zumwalt North Tournament

Wildcats open weekend with win over St. Dominic, but lose in third-place game against Timberland.

O’FALLON – After being relegated to nothing but practices and simulated games in the school gym because of the constant rain in the area the last two weeks, the Hazelwood West High varsity baseball team finally got to play some actual games this past weekend. The Wildcats were one of eight teams competing in the Fort Zumwalt North High Tournament, at Westhoff and Ozzie Smith parks, with a chance to play against several ranked teams from different parts of the region. Unfortunately though, a weekend which began with such promise, including a 4-1 win against St. Dominic High (ranked No. 5 in area top 10 small schools poll), ended with a thud, 8-4 and 13-2 losses against Fort Zumwalt East High and Timberland High (No. 10 large schools), …

Hazelwood West Baseball Whips Riverview 13-1

Homers by Trevor Jones, Shane Olmstead lead Wildcats to second straight mercy-rule win.

BELLEFONTAINE -- Sometimes in baseball, you just know it’s going to be your day. Especially when the smallest guy on the field cracks a 420-foot home run on the first pitch of the game. That’s what happened April 12, when the Hazelwood West High varsity baseball team visited Riverview Gardens High. Senior centerfielder Trevor Jones led off the game with a monster blast on the first pitch of the game, to spark the Wildcats to a 13-1 win against the Rams. “That’s actually the second game in a row Trevor’s done that,” Hazelwood West head baseball coach, Matt McClellan, said. “He did that last Thursday when we played Hazelwood East, too. It sure is a nice way to start a game off.” Jones’ clout was his second of the season, and the fourth of …

Wildcats Let One Get Away Against Rival Hawks

Wildcats fall to 3-4.

With the game tied at two in the top of the seventh inning, Hazelwood West High’s Trevor Jones made a mistake he’s probably never made before, and most likely will never make again. The 2010 all-Suburban North Conference centerfielder, who recently accepted a scholarship to join one of the nation’s top Division II baseball programs next fall, dropped a routine fly ball that allowed the leadoff runner to advance to third with nobody out. That uncharacteristic gaffe by one of the best prep outfielders in the area, sparked a two-run rally for Hazelwood Central, which proved to be the difference in a 4-2 loss for the host Wildcats. “Trevor normally makes plays like that,” Matt McClellan, West's varsity baseball coach, said after the game. “But…
