All Day Oday: Another Brilliant Season at the Plate for the Wildcats

Coming off an all-conference junior season, senior Oday Al-Yatim has improved his numbers in every way, and leads the Hazelwood West Wildcats in batting average, hits, RBIs, and on-base percentage.

Even after delivering a first-team all-conference season last year as the starting catcher for the Hazelwood West High School varsity baseball team, senior Oday Al-Yatim just wasn't satisfied. Nevermind he hit .342 and had 17 runs batted in, for a team that made it to the district championship game. He was also selected as the designated hitter for the Suburban North Conference all-star team last year. Al-Yatim spent the entire offseason believing he didn't really play his best his junior year, and that he needed to have a big senior season if he really wanted to showcase his talents. "That's just the kind of kid Oday is," said Hazelwood West head coach Matt McClellan. "He's an unbelievable hard-worker. He works on every aspect of his game…

Fosdick Cousins Lead Hazelwood West to the Top of Suburban North Conference

Known better for their pitching talents, cousins Brendan and Jared Fosdick have also been dynamite at the plate for the Wildcats this season.

Winning on the baseball diamond has become a family affair at Hazelwood West High School. Head coach Matt McClellan is the brother of St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Kyle McClellan, who also attended Hazelwood West and graduated in 2002. Last year's star player was Trevor Jones, a speedy outfielder and two-time all-conference selection for the Wildcats, just like his older brother Nate was a few years ago. And this season, it's a pair of cousins, Brendan and Jared Fosdick, that has led Hazelwood West to a 7-4 record and to within a half-game of first place in the Suburban North Conference standings this season. "It's great having them on the team," McClellan said. "They're an important part of what we do, and they're good leaders for …

Hazelwood West Wins Baseball Home Opener Over Rival McCluer North

Healthy and on the mound again, senior Brendan Fosdick tosses a complete-game shutout to lead Wildcats past the visiting Stars.

Not even a pesky early-inning rainstorm could put a damper on the first home game of the season for the Hazelwood West baseball team, which took on rival McCluer North, Thursday afternoon at Beckemeier Field. The Wildcats, a new and improved bunch over last year's 14-13 club, withstood the intermittent rains, and with a bit of clutch hitting, some terrific defense, and a sensational pitching performance by senior Brendan Fosdick, easily dispatched the visiting Stars for a 6-0 win. "It was a good win for sure," said West head coach Matt McClellan. "I thought we played a pretty good game all the way around." Especially on the mound, where Fosdick simply mowed down McCluer North, with a brilliant complete-game effort, in which he allowed no…

Hazelwood West Baseball Snags Two Big Wins Just In Time For Playoff Run

The Wildcats beat conference champions Pattonville and Howell Central on back-to-back days this week.

O’FALLON – To say the lineup for Friday’s varsity baseball regular season finale at Fort Zumwalt West High was a little different than the one Hazelwood West usually uses would be a major understatement. The Wildcats sat two of their best hitters, started several guys that usually come off the bench, and played several others out of position. The Hazelwood West team that played Thursday was definitely a different looking bunch than the one it usually sends out for games on a daily basis. “You could definitely say that,” Hazelwood West head coach Matt McClellan said. “We had some different guys out there playing. We just wanted to give some guys some rest, and get some other guys that hadn’t got to play a lot some innings.” And …
