The City of Hazelwood's team is ready for another chance at becoming the conference champion as it begins its 2012 summer season Saturday, with the season-opening all-team relay meet in Florissant Fish territory at Bangert Pool. The 40-event competition, will also featured teams from Bellefontaine, Ferguson and Dellwood. Hazelwood West Back On Track with Win Over Ritenour

Nearly every player on the Wildcat roster scores in 54-37 road win, as the team still searches for right combinations.

OVERLAND – Facing a fired-up, packed house in a visiting gym might not seem like the right place for a suddenly struggling team to find its place in the middle of a season. But those circumstances seemed to bring out the best in the Hazelwood West boys basketball team, as it traveled to Ritenour High’s Costilow Field House Friday night, for a critical Suburban North Conference game. And sure, it took a while for the Wildcats to get going, but once they did, there was no stopping them in what proved to be an impressive 54-37 win over the Huskies. “I wasn’t happy with how we played coming out of Carbondale,” said West High head coach Cary Lewis Jr. “We went 2-2 up there, and we played some really good competition, so I really thought we’d …

Thrills and Chills Lead Hazelwood West to Second-Place Finish at St. Charles West Tournament

The Wildcats won the first two games in exciting fashion, then fell just short after rallying from 19 points down in championship game against Lutheran North.

ST. CHARLES–With an exciting start to the boys basketball season, the Hazelwood West Wildcats took home second place in the prestigious St. Charles West Warrior Classic Tournament, after a 68-64 loss Friday night to Lutheran North in the championship game. “Hats off to the kids,” said West coach Cary Lewis Jr. “They fought, fought, fought, fought the whole way. The kudos go to the kids. I didn’t have anything to do with it. I was just out there watching.” And what the coach watched was three terribly exciting ballgames played by the Wildcats against stiff competition. In Monday’s season opener against Ft. Zumwalt West, the Wildcats lost their lead on a last-second shot, but then won the game on a buzzer-beater by junior Devon Carter. Then …

Hazelwood West Wins Second Last-Minute Thriller this Week, Advances in Tourney Play

Senior Derrian Johnson's spectacular, game-winning layup in the final minute helps lift Wildcats to 66-59 win over Kirkwood.

ST. CHARLES-Two games into the new boys basketball season, and one thing’s for sure—it’s going to be an exciting year for the Hazelwood West Wildcats. At least it sure seems that way, after West won both of its first two contests with last-minute rallies in the prestigious St. Charles West Warrior Classic Tournament at St. Charles West High School. On Monday night, the Wildcats pulled out a spine-tingling win against Ft. Zumwalt West, thanks to a last-second shot by junior Devon Carter. And on Wednesday night, it was a brilliant final minute rally, sparked by senior Derrian Johnson’s spectacular driving layup, that led the Wildcats to a 66-59 win over Kirkwood High School. “Hats off to Kirkwood,” said Hazelwood West head basketball coach …

Hazelwood West Tires in Overtime Against Howell Central, Rozycki’s Blast Claims Sectional Victory

Spartans and Wilcats go scoreless through regulation and two overtimes, before senior’s goal in seventh round of penalty kicks ends West’s season and sends Central to state quarterfinals.

O’FALLON–Despite being the Spartans leading goal-scorer this season, Francis Howell Central High School senior Stephen Rozycki is not normally one of the players coach Derek Phillips would choose to take a penalty kick at the end of a game. This is not because Rozycki isn’t good at it, but because some of his Howell Central teammates seem to have a stronger propensity for making them when they take them. But Wednesday, the Class 3 sectional playoff game at Ft. Zumwalt South’s Jack Ball Stadium remained tied after six rounds of penalty kicks. It was at that time that Rozycki stepped up and calmly smashed a shot past Hazelwood West goalkeeper Nick Ehlers that gave the Spartans a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks and a nail-biting victory against the…

Hazelwood West, Howell Central Ready for Wednesday Sectional Soccer Matchup

The 20-7 Wildcats to take on 17-7-3 Spartans in first round playoff showdown, with the winner advancing to state quarterfinals on Saturday.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association boys soccer tournament were supposed to get underway Tuesday, with games all over the state, in all three competitive classifications but in the St. Louis area, rain halted that. So now Wednesday is gameday. One of the most anticipated matchups will be the early evening meeting at Don Muench Stadium, between Suburban North Conference champion Hazelwood West and GAC South co-champ Francis Howell Central. The Wildcats, who come into Wednesday’s sectional round game with a 20-7 record this season, have been on a fantastic roll since the beginning of October. In the last month, West has won 10 of its last 12 contests, including a pair of sensational victories in the Class 3 District 6 …

High School Sports Wrap: Hazelwood West Wins District Title, Florissant Teams Head to Playoffs

Hazelwood West wins fourth straight district volleyball title, while three Florissant teams advance in state football playoffs.

The championship hardware just keeps piling up for the Hazelwood West girls volleyball program. Two weeks ago, the Wildcats clinched their third straight Suburban North Conference championship with a win over McCluer North High School. Then last week, West made it four straight district championships, with a straight-set win over rival Hazelwood Central in the Missouri Class 4 District 6 championship game at McCluer High School. “This is awesome,” West coach Michael Vaughn said. “I’m so happy for the girls. It’s been a fun year, and we’re excited to be district champs again.” Senior Sara Gregor, the likely Suburban North Conference Player of the Year smashed 19 kills on 24 attempts in the championship to power West to the win. “It’s going …

Hazelwood West Wins Fourth Straight Volleyball District Championship

Wildcats beat rivals Hazelwood East and Hazelwood Central on final day to claim another district title.

FLORISSANT – To say the Hazelwood West High School girls volleyball team came ready to play on the final day of the MSHSAA Class 4 District 6 tournament at McCluer High School, would be a major understatement. The Wildcats, who locked up their third straight Suburban North Conference title last week with a win over McCluer North High School, made quick work of rival programs Hazelwood East and Hazelwood Central high schools, in the semifinals and finals, to claim their fourth straight district title under head coach Michael Vaughn. “This is awesome,” Vaughn said. “I’m so happy for the girls. "It’s been a fun year, and we’re excited to be district champs again.” West (17-13) has now earned a spot in the state championship tournament, and …

Hazelwood West Soccer Takes Back-to-Back Suburban North Titles with 3-0 Win Over Pattonville

The win against the Pirates on Friday means the Wildcats go unbeaten in league play for the second straight year.

The Hazelwood West High School boys soccer team reached one of its primary goals of the season Friday afternoon when it completed an unbeaten season in Suburban North Conference play. The Wildcats won their second straight league title, thanks to a 3-0 win over rival Pattonville High School. “I’m really proud of what these guys did out here this season,” said West's coach Jason Sellers. “We’ve been on a good roll.”   And it’s getting close to becoming a decade-long roll for the Wildcats, who have won the Suburban North boys soccer championship six times in the last eight years under Sellers. During that time, West has been nearly unbeaten against conference opponents, winning all but five games in eight years and winning all but two in the…
