There will not be a job fair on Thursday at Hazelwood East Middle School.
The Hazelwood School District will not be hosting its “Spring into Employment” job fair on Thursday as originally planned. Kimberly McKenzie, HSD community relations and communication specialist, sent out the cancellation announcement early Tuesday morning. "There was limited participation," she said. " It will be revised for next year." The district did host the first two sessions of the three part employment event on April 4 and April 18. The sessions taught job seekers about résumé building, applying for applications, how to interview for a job and job skills. The Hazelwood School District Board of Education also approved extra pay for staff that perform extra duties like coaching.
The Hazelwood School District (HSD) Board of Education approved a few contracts at its recent meeting last week. The board approved extra duty salaries for employees. Diana Gulotta, HSD assistant superintendent for communications said employees with extra duty pay are those who pick up some type of extra duty, such as coaching, in addition to teaching. The board approved the dates for paying those stipends. A contract was also approved for three, one-ton vans for employee use performing school business. Gulotta said the district received six bids and selected Dave Sinclair Automotive Group. The cost total cost for all the vans is $69,030. Garrett Elementary is the only HSD school in the City of Hazelwood that will end the school year with the rest of the district on May 30.
The Hazelwood School District (HSD) schools impacted by the April 10 tornado that ripped through Hazelwood will be in school one day longer than the rest of the district. The Board of Education approved a recommendation for a revision to the 2012-13 calendar, due to the days of school missed because of the EF2 Twister that ripped through the area. Students at Hazelwood West High School, Hazelwood West Middle School, McNair Elementary, Russell Elementary, Armstrong Elementary and Hazelwood West Early Childhood Center, will attend school through May 31. Due to the recent storm and power outages related to the tornado that hit Hazelwood, the school decided to move its yard sale from April 13 to April 27.
Due to the recent storm and power outages, the McNair Elementary School PTA has rescheduled its Yard Sale/Vendor Extravaganza to Saturday, April 27 from 8 a.m. to noon. The event will take place at McNair Elementary, 585 Coachway Lane, Hazelwood, MO 63042. The PTA is hosting this event in an effort to raise funds to purchase Promethean boards for every classroom. If you wish to donate items, drop them off at the school cafeteria on Friday, April 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Heavy furniture, such as couches, large appliances or mattresses will not be accepted.

The North County community’s recovery from tornado and storm damage continues to be a top priority for the Hazelwood School District (HSD). The Hazelwood School District Parent Teacher Association Council has announced its cancellation of the Taste of North County at Hazelwood Central. “The HSD PTA Council scholarship committee fully supports the effort to help our community,” Sarah Day, Hazelwood PTA Council president said in a news release. Even though our scholarship fundraising efforts are important, we want to support our families affected by the tornado. Hazelwood School District Board of Education incumbents Cheryl Latham and Carlton Thornton were sworn in at Tuesday's meeting. Both board members took the oath of office. Following the swearing in, the board held elections for leadership positions on the board of education with the following results: The board recently approved several promotions and hires for the 2013-14 school year. At it's last meeting, the Board of Education approved a revised 2012-13 school calendar which reflects the school year ending May 29 for the district. School was originally set to end on May 31. Some students in the Hazelwood School District (HSD) will have enjoyed a five-day weekend after returning to school on Monday. Class is canceled for students that attend six schools within Hazelwood city limits. The entire district was out of school Thursday, due to power outages in North County related to the EF2 Twister that ripped through the area, flattening homes in Hazelwood and causing lots of damage in Florissant. For those families affected by the storm, the district has opened its Early Childhood Center.
Although the Hazelwood School District is closed due to the storm today, the district has opened their doors to those families affected, according to the district’s Facebook page. The district is offering daycare services to those families in the district affected by the storm. The services will be provided at the Galactic/Early Childhood Center on New Halls Ferry Road in Florissant. Interested parents are asked to enter through the center’s entrance and complete the registration information. The daycare will be open 1-7 p.m. today for the ages of 3-12.
