Bookworm Challenge: St. Louis Teams Compete in Annual Book Battle

Pattonville Heights hosts the trivia-style battle for its seventh year.

As trivia-style events continue to grow in popularity throughout the St. Louis-area, one school has found a way to make it both educational and a fun time for students. On Tuesday, 33 teams from schools across St. Louis competed at Pattonville Heights Middle School in the Book Battle Challenge, where teams tested their knowledge of 20 books that members read throughout the school year. This is the seventh year for the event. “It’s really cool to watch kids who are so connected to the world to actually prepare for battle because they had to read books,” Pattonville Heights language arts teacher and Book Battle committee member Jan von Harz said. East High Hosts Elementary Special Olympics Athletes

More than 190 children from area schools including Armstrong Elementary, are expected to participate on Friday.

It was rained out last week, but now Hazelwood East High School (HEHS) will welcome elementary students for its annual Special Olympics track meet on Friday. That's right, more than 190 elementary-aged children are set to participate, with opening ceremonies and torch lighting beginning at 9:30 a.m. Hazelwood School District schools participating include Armstrong Elementary, Barrington Elementary, Grannemann Elementary, Larimore Elementary, Lawson Elementary, Lusher Elementary, McCurdy Elementary, Twillman Elementary, Hazelwood Central Middle, Hazelwood North Middle and Hazelwood Southeast Middle. Get Ready to Run and Walk with the Hazelwood School District Saturday

It's time for the They’ll be out for the 32nd Annual Hazelwood PTA Scholarship Run/Walk event. More than 2,000 participants are expected to turn out to run, walk and enjoy the festivities of the day starting at 8 a.m., and ending at noon. The Hazelwood School District (HSD) PTA coordinates the event each year to benefit students’ scholarships to college. The group hopes to raise $50,000 this year, which would provide $500 scholarships to 100 students. For more than 30 years the event has raised more than $2 million for the Hazelwood PTA Student Scholarship Fund. Garrett Elementary Educator Named One of Missouri’s Outstanding Beginning Teachers

The Missouri Association of Colleges for Teachers Education named William Livingston one of Missouri’s Outstanding Beginning Teachers. Livingston has taught fifth-grade math at Garrett Elementary School for two years.

William Livingston, a math teacher in the City of Hazelwood, has a few tips for new teachers―you will make mistakes, but it's what you learn from them. “Focus on building relationships with your students," he said. "If you can build relationships, everything else will fall into place. The Missouri Association of Colleges for Teachers Education (MACTE) has named Livingston one of Missouri’s Outstanding Beginning Teachers, and his relationship building is just one of the reasons why. Livingston has taught fifth-grade math at Garrett Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District for two years. Target Donates More than $2K to Blossom Wood Day School, Hazelwood School District

Hazelwood students reap the benefits of Target's Take Charge of Education program.

Although several area school districts, such as Hazelwood, are working to overcome financial hurdles, some area schools are getting a helping hand from a large retail company. Several Hazelwood-area schools have received funding thanks to Target’s “Take Charge of Education” initiative, a signature program designed to provide funds to area K-12 schools for their most important needs, such as books, classroom technology and so forth. The program has donated more than $350 million to schools across the country since 1997, according to its website. The program is also a part of the company’s commitment to give $1 billion to education by the end of 2015, Sarah Van Nevel, a spokeswoman for the company, wrote in an email. “As part of our …

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) Board of Education will convene Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., to discuss district business. The board will hear a quarterly update report regarding the district's supplier diversity program. The last update, given in early February, included stats through Dec. 31, 2012, on minority and women supplier participation as it pertains to bid contracts awarded within the district. HSD Grapples with Technology Improvement Challenges

The Center for Educational Leadership and Technology came into the district and conducted a study that involved more than 1,300 students, staff and parents to find out where it's lacking.

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) is being proactive in creating a blueprint for updating its technology, not only as it pertains to curriculum, but also to the buildings' infrastructure. HSD hired the Center for Educational Leadership and Technology (CELT) based in Marlborough, Massachusetts to make recommendations for updating the district's technology infrastructure. At a recent board of education meeting, the company discussed its preliminary findings, which it called an IT Blueprint. The report is set to be finalized and released to the public some time this month. Hazelwood School District Serves as Site for Common Core Meeting

The Missouri Department of Education will host one of eight statewide meetings in North County.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will host a number of statewide informational meetings on the state’s Common Core Standards, which includes a site in North St. Louis County. The Hazelwood School District will serve as a site for one of eight statewide meetings regarding the standards Thursday evening. The Common Core Standards are a part of a nationwide initiative to have a set of clearly defined educational standards in language arts and math for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Missouri is one of 45 states to adopt the standards. According to the DESE press release, the meetings are a part of the state’s ongoing outreach efforts regarding the standards. Hazelwood School District Cancels ‘Spring Into Employment’ Job Fair

There will not be a job fair on Thursday at Hazelwood East Middle School.

The Hazelwood School District will not be hosting its “Spring into Employment” job fair on Thursday as originally planned.  Kimberly McKenzie, HSD community relations and communication specialist, sent out the cancellation announcement early Tuesday morning. "There was limited participation," she said. " It will be revised for next year." The district did host the first two sessions of the three part employment event on April 4 and April 18. The sessions taught job seekers about résumé building, applying for applications, how to interview for a job and job skills. The event took place at Hazelwood East Middle School but McKenzie said next year will be a bit different. "We are looking to change the location and make it an off-site event," …
