A Healthier Halloween: 5 Trick-or-Treat Alternatives to Candy

Instead of handing out candy this Halloween, here are five different treat ideas for children that come knocking at your door.

The candy business rakes in a whopping $20 billion each year, with almost $2 billion of that figure coming from Halloween candy, according to creditloan.com. The average household spends $44 on Halloween candy per year. With that said, it’s safe to say that while most people give and receive candy on All Hallows’ Eve, not everyone does. Don't forget to share your Halloween costume photos with your neighbors! Enter Patch’s Best Halloween Costume in America Contest for a chance to win $5000! In a world where consumers are becoming more aware and concerned with oral health, obesity and allergies, some parents choose not to give their children candy and prefer not to hand it out to others. Haunted Happenings: Paranormal Encounters Around St. Louis

We're sharing some tales of ghostly haunts around St. Louis Patchland. Have your own? Tell us about it!

In the immortal words of Ray Parker, Jr. (crooning the theme song from the movie Ghostbusters), "I ain't 'fraid of no ghost." We may not confess to being afraid, but many people would admit to being fascinated by ghosts.  To go along with our Halloween video, Patch provides this roundup of metro St. Louis ghost stories. Creve Coeur The story behind how Creve Coeur got its name is pretty haunting, although no one knows whether there's an actual ghost lurking around. The city's website shares this tale: Legend has it that an Indian princess fell in love with a French fur trapper, but the love was not returned. According to the story, she then jumped from a ledge overlooking Creve Coeur Lake; the lake then formed itself into a broken heart. …

Stay Safe and Have Fun on Halloween

Patch offers a tips for fun and safety on Halloween, as well as a round-up of local, family-friendly events.

Why didn’t the skeleton cross the road? Because he didn’t have the guts, of course! That’s right, it’s almost Halloween, and in some St. Louis-area neighborhoods, you won’t get a treat without a trick. You can sing or dance or tell a funny joke, but unless you’re a super-cute toddler, you might need to do a little something special to get your treat. Savvy trick-or-treaters can prepare their acts in advance by finding plenty of good, clean Halloween jokes at GuySports.com. Stay Safe on Halloween Along with the fun of trick-or-treating, parents need to be concerned with their kids’ safety. While Halloween can provide hours of entertainment and serious candy benefits, approximately four times as many kids between the ages of 5 and 14 are …
