What is Ash Wednesday? A Few Facts About the Start of Lent

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar. Do you participate in Ash Wednesday? Tell us why or why not in the comments section.

If you see someone walking around today with a cross made of ash on their forehead, you should know it's Ash Wednesday, the start of the lenten season. A time of cleansing, sacrifice, increased prayer and reflection. St. Martin de Porres held a Wednesday 8 a.m. music service and mass, and is also having a 7 p.m. music service and mass in honor of Ash, according to its calendar. Here are a few facts about the time: Lent does not begin on Ash Wednesday all over the world. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar. The Eastern Orthodox church typically does not observe Ash Wednesday and begins Lent instead on "Clean Monday." Ash Wednesday falls 46 days before Easter. It is known as the "40 days of Lent" …

Volunteer: Help NoCo Lutheran Senior Services with Mardi Gras Party

Or help out with COY on March 2. Here are some ways to help the community.

Mardi Gras Party Help Lutheran Senior Services in North County set up, clean up and host a Mardi Gras party for assisted living and independent seniors on Feb. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. Volunteers will decorate, serve refreshments and relax with residents. Supplies are provided. Minimum age to volunteer is 21. Sign up by contacting Pam Gordon at pgordon@lssliving.org. Traffic Ahead: Mardi Gras Activities Close Some Interstate Ramps Downtown

The Missouri Department of Transportation reports on the St. Louis work zones for February 7-13.

On Saturday, the following ramps will be closed for Mardi Gras from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Beginning Feb. 11, crews working on the new I-64 Daniel Boone Missouri River Bridge will have once a day closures of I-64 for rock blasting adjacent to the eastbound lanes of I-64 at the St Charles County end of the bridge. I-64 traffic will be slowed and potentially stopped for up to 10 minutes at either 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. weekdays for approximately one month. At the time of the blast, local law enforcement vehicles and construction vehicles will slow I-64 traffic. Eastbound traffic will be slowed starting at the Route 94 interchange.
