Hazelwood West Homecoming 2011

McCluer Hands Hazelwood West A Homecoming Loss

Visiting Comets ruin Hazelwood's Homecoming fun with a 36-20 win over the host Wildcats.

For most of the first half of Saturday’s Homecoming football game against visiting McCluer, the Hazelwood West Wildcats were right on schedule. They were moving the ball, collecting first downs, and even scoring points on offense, while also completing limiting the Comets and controlling the line of scrimmage on defense. West was in pretty good shape with only a few minutes left until the halftime break. Late in the half though, sparked by a pair big-time touchdown tosses by quarterback Berlin Hollomon, McCluer got its air attack on track, and flew right past Hazelwood West, for what would become a 36-20 win for the visitors. “That’s two weeks in a row,” said McCluer head football coach Joe Henke. “We just start slow. And that comes from …

Hazelwood West Can't Overcome Flat Start Against Columbia Hickman

Senior Justin Moss rushes for 78 yards and scores his first varsity touchdown in 27-9 loss to visiting Kewpies.

The Hazelwood West High School Wildcats varsity football team fell to 0-3 under new coach Duane Hawthorne, after suffering a 27-9 home defeat to Columbia (MO) based David H. Hickman High School, Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium. The Wildcats gave an admittedly disheartening performance in the first half,  according to Hawthorne, but after getting shutout 20-0 in the first 24 minutes, West’s first-year head coach found a lot to be positive about in a second half, in which the Wildcats outscored the Kewpies 9-7. “That first half was embarrassing,” Hawthorne said. “I was embarrassed. We should all be embarrassed. But we talked about a few things at halftime, made a few changes, and the guys played better.” The Wildcats did indeed play …

Hazelwood West Loses to Belleville East in Season Opener

Senior Joey McCune leads the Wildcats' defense with 14 tackles, and he scores the only West touchdown in 35-7 loss.

Hazelwood West High School football finally dropped the curtain on its 2011 season Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium. Unfortunately, by the time it was over, it was visiting Belleville East High School that had lowered the boom on the Wildcats, to the tune of a 35-7 whipping in both teams’ first game of the new season. “You've got to give credit to those guys,” West head coach Duane Hawthorne said. “Up front, we couldn't handle them. I told our kids all week long the game is going to be won in the trenches. And they did a much better job than we did.” The Lancers also seemed to do a much better job of handling the nerves, especially in the early going, when they jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead over the varsity Wildcat team. Belleville …

I didn't notice they were that spread out. If they were, I'm sure that was an alignment error and that's something the Wildcats are gonna have to fix and fix quick, b/c this Harrisonville team they play on Friday is no joke. Won 3 straight state titles earlier this decade.   more ›

2011 Wildcats Football Preview

Hazelwood West High School's varsity football team went 1-9 last season, but new coach Duane Hawthorne believes program can make a comeback.

After researching last year’s 1-9 team and watching film of all 10 games, new Hazelwood West High head football coach Duane Hawthorne was more than a little concerned that maybe the Wildcats’ problem was they just didn’t have enough talent to compete. Not only did Hazelwood West High School finish last in the Suburban North Conference standings last year, the Wildcats had one of the least productive offenses in the entire area, scoring just 81 points all season, and averaging just 8.1 points a game. “They weren’t getting a whole lot done,” Hawthorne said. “Watching the film, I’m not sure what they were trying to do on offense, but whatever it was, it wasn’t getting done. It’s hard to win that way.” So heading into summer workouts this year…

Let the Games Begin: Hazelwood West Releases 2011 Football Schedules

The Wildcats will open this season at home on Saturday, Aug. 27 against Belleville East.

With the first day of fall practice set for Aug. 8, and the first day of school slated for Aug. 15, Hazelwood West High School began the official start of its 2011-2012 sporting year over the weekend by releasing its 2011 varsity, junior varsity and freshman football schedules. The Wildcats, a program under new management with the hiring of former NFL star Duane Hawthorne, have been practicing and training all summer in preparation for what figures to be an exciting new era of Hazelwood West football. The West varsity and junior varsity teams will play 10 regular season games in 2011, while the freshman team has an eight-game schedule. All three teams will play against the other seven Suburban North Conference teams—Hazelwood Central, …
