Zephrex-D: Meth-Busting Decongestant in St. Louis Pharmacies This Year

Highland Pharmaceuticals plans to offer Zephrex-D in St. Louis pharmacies by November. The new decongestant reportedly cannot be converted into meth and might not require a prescription.

In an effort to fight methamphetamine, Missouri cities and counties, although not St. Louis County, are passing ordinances requiring prescriptions to purchase pseudoephedrine products like Claritin-D and Allegra-D. (Sign up here for the FREE Patch Newsletter, including Breaking News Alerts.) Pseudoephedrine is the key meth making ingredient needed to make the drug. It is extracted from popular allergy medications and converted into meth.  Now, a new decongestant set for sale in St. Louis area pharmacies in November is touted as meth-resistant and gaining support by area drug agents.  Zephrex-D, manufactured by Maryland Heights based Highland Pharmaceuticals, is a new pseudoephedrine product that police and the drug's maker hope will stop …

Walgreens Says Many Express Scripts Customers Are Staying Put

The pharmacy chain announced Tuesday that Express Scripts members in metro St. Louis and nationwide are opting to keep their prescriptions at Walgreens.

The Walgreens Prescription Savings Club (PSC) allows eligible patients who have pharmacy benefit plans managed by Express Scripts to avoid switching pharmacies, according to a Walgreens press release. During the month of January, Walgreens is lowering the enrollment fee for the PSC in an effort to encourage Express Scripts members continue to use Walgreens pharmacies when possible, or to make a smoother transition to another local pharmacy. In June, Walgreens announced it was parting ways with Express Scripts, a metro-St. Louis based pharmacy benefit manager.  Kermit Crawford, Walgreens president of Pharmacy, Health and Wellness Solutions and Services, expressed frustration with Express Scripts and the company's "decision to reject our …

This police blotter reflects incidents the Hazelwood Police Department responded to from May 17 - June 26. It includes crimes including theft, home invasions, drug arrests and more.

JUNE 26 PROTECTIVE CUSTODY: A woman was taken into protective custody after she was found drunk and laying on the ground in White Birch Park. PRIVATE PROPERTY ACCIDENT: Police arrested a man for driving with a suspended license and no proof of insurance in the 400 block of Elm Grove Lane. He had backed into a police officer. JUNE 25 STEALING: A business reported a man drove off without paying for $53 in gasoline in the 6000 block of Howdershell Road. DRUG PARAPHERNALIA: Police arrested a suspect for possession of marijuana paraphernalia during a traffic stop in the 400 block of Lynn Haven Lane. Saving the Teens: Heroin a Growing Problem in St. Louis County

St. Louis County Police and drug treatment professionals were in Maryland Heights to talk about heroin's dangers Thursday night.

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch once talked with a young woman arrested for buying heroin. She was from Ballwin, and told Finch she got hooked because she was battling depression. The first time she tried it, according to Fitch, she got a high that she hasn’t been able to achieve since. According to a heroin addiction website, one of the drug's most insidious qualities is that is sends the addict on a quest to repeat that first high, usually a fruitless journey. Heroin addiction isn’t a light switch you can turn off and on, Fitch told a crowded audience at Pattonville High School Thursday night. Fitch was part of a public forum about heroin use among teens.
