A federal judge has dismissed all but one claim in lawsuits filed against Mallinckrodt, in which 29 people believe radioactive contamination in Coldwater Creek caused their cancers.
Those fighting a faceless battle my feel a bit of defeat after U.S. District Court judge Audrey Fleissig on Wednesday, dismissed all but one claim in lawsuits filed against Mallinckrodt (now Covidien, which is based in the City of Hazelwood) regarding Coldwater Creek's radioactive contamination and its link to their cancers and other illnesses. Twenty-nine individuals were involved in the lawsuit, but thousands more believe the correlation like Mary Christine Moore who commented on Patch about the situation. "Many of my 1968 graduating class are dead (of) cancer," said Moore whose family lived on Stoneham Drive in Berkeley. Moore said her mother died of ovarian cancer in 2006. Eagan Community Center in Florissant is canceled. ---------------- The legal teams working three lawsuits regarding Coldwater Creek contamination and the health impacts on North County residents, will be hosting two town hall-style meetings next week. The meetings are an effort to inform the public on the proceedings, and to let those who feel living, playing or working near the creek negatively impacted their helath have options. The meetings are slated for Wednesday and Thursday in Hazelwood and Florissant, respectively. Each is a public meeting and is open to all residents. Due to public concern, the Missouri Health Department has teamed up with the University of Missouri to compile statistics on instances of cancer in North County.
Because of the growing concern with rare instances of cancer in North County near Coldwater Creek, the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS) has epidemiologists looking into cancer rates. The epidemiologists, which investigate the causes of disease and other public health problems to prevent them from spreading or from happening again, will look at figures from zip codes including 63031, 63033, 63034, 63042, 63134, 63138. Gena Terlizzi with DHSS Office of Public Information said the state will be working with the University of Missouri on the research. TorHoerman Law has been appointed in the Coldwater Creek case to act on behalf of all the North County residents seeking to hold companies responsible for mishandling the storage and transportation of radioactive waste.

According to the lawsuit, nuclear waste was dumped near Lambert Saint Louis International Airport and contaminated Coldwater Creek starting in the 1940s through the 1950s. Mallinckrodt, the pharmaceuticals business of Covidien based in the City of Hazelwood has began an effort to stop teenagers from abusing the products it produces locally. The company joined The Partnership at Drugfree.org in launching The Medicine Abuse Project. The Partnership is a multi-year effort to raise awareness and curb the abuse of prescription medicine by teens and young adults. The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning to physicians and patients about a Covidien manufactured product. The Onyx Liquid Embolic System has an issue where the catheter used to deliver the liquid can get stuck inside the patient’s brain. The product is not one manufactured at the company's Hazelwood location, but is linked to nine deaths, according to Blomberg. In fact, the product is one inherited– formerly made by Minnesota-based ev3 – which Covidien acquired for $2.6 billion in 2010, according to New York Times. The Hazelwood-based company has entered into a co-promotion agreement with Horizon Pharma, Inc. to produce an anti-inflammatory drug to help with the disease.
Mallinckrodt, the pharmaceuticals business of Covidien is entering into a co-promotion agreement with Horizon Pharma, Inc. on a drug designed to help those living with the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. The Hazelwood-based sector of the company will promote the new drug, DUEXIS, which is a combination of ibuprofen and famotidine. According to Mallinckrodt, it is a proprietary single-tablet combination of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen and the histamine H2-receptor antagonist famotidine. It is indicated for the relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, as well as to decrease the risk of developing upper gastrointestinal ulcers. Clean Water STL has received roughly $385,000 in monetary support in the last five weeks. The committee wants St. Louis residents to vote Tuesday in favor of Proposition Y, a measure that will affect sewer rates throughout the area.
Financial support has been pouring in for a committee aimed at getting St. Louisans to vote in favor of a sewer proposition next week. The special election for Proposition Y is Tuesday in the City of Hazelwood and other St. Louis County municipalities, as well as parts of St. Louis city. Documents filed this week with the Missouri Ethics Commission show Clean Water STL—the committee formed to back the proposition—received approximately $385,000 in monetary contributions between April 22 and May 24.
