Patch's 'Red Arch' survey shows 'Other' ties or outpolls prime contenders like Ohio Senator Rob Portman or former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.
If Missouri Republican activists had their way, Mitt Romney would select Florida U.S. Senator Marco Rubio or former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as his running mate. That's according to findings in the latest Patch "Red Arch" survey. More than 60 influential Republicans, primarily from the St. Louis area, were asked using an automated survey tool what they thought about the GOP vice presidential options. When asked who they would like to see as Mitt Romney's running mate, 31 percent answered Rubio, the first term United States Senator from Florida who has been a Tea Party favorite. The Wagner campaign responds to speculation from Politico that she may switch races.
Ann Wagner wowed political observers with her latest fundraising quarter. So much so, in fact, that at least one politico speculated that she might be eyeing another contest. Wagner, a Ballwin Republican who previously served as Missouri Republican Party chairwoman and ambassador to Luxemburg, raised $532,093.07 in the 3rd quarter for her 2nd Congressional District bid. As former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney continues his comeback in the polls, he’s also picking up support from Republicans in the Show Me State. Romney's campaign – which already grabbed endorsements from U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and former U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo. – rolled out a press release this week showcasing more endorsements from Republican politicians. The 2nd District candidates are set to debate each other this week.
When is it too early to get fired up about a congressional race? If you’re addicted to the sweet, sweet nectar that is Missouri politics, the answer is never. Still, “early” was admittedly the first word that came to mind with debate season starting up between GOP congressional aspirants Ed Martin and Ann Wagner. The two are running for the Republican nomination in the 2nd Congressional District, which encompasses St. Louis County, St. Charles County and Jefferson County. For what it’s worth, filing for the race doesn’t begin until early next year. And the primary itself isn’t until August 2012. Two GOP candidates seeking to dislodge Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) are in a spat over the constitutionality of Medicare. Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), running for the U.S. Senate, gained attention last weekend because of comments he made in Fulton, MO. Akin was quoted in the Columbia Daily Tribune saying that he doesn’t “find in the Constitution that it is the job of the government to provide health care.” Akin added as a practical matter, Medicare can’t be repealed. “Now people have contributed their money to it.
