Robertson Fire Protection District Helps Children Go Back-to-School Fully Equipped

Several Robertson Fire Protection District firefighters were on hand Aug. 7, to give back to their community by hosting a back-to-school barbecue and supply giveaway.

Youth across the country are preparing to head back to school this month. But many of those young people will head back without the necessary tools and supplies needed to enjoy the school learning experience. On Sunday, the Robertson Fire Protection District (RFPD) hosted its first back-to-school barbecue and supply giveaway in the parking lot of the Hazelwood West Early Childhood Education Center, to help ensure some area students will be ready next week when school resumes. The event was open to residents within the district, which includes parts of Hazelwood, Bridgeton and unincorporated St. Louis County. Hazelwood resident Marie Fingers arrived early with her two children.  "I think it's great that they're doing this," she said. …

July is the month with the most grilling accidents. So this Fourth of July heed these tips for a safer summer barbecue.

The summer months are the perfect time for barbecues with friends and family, but it is all too easy to forget that grills can pose a serious hazard to you and those around you if not taken care of properly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, gas grills were responsible for an annual average of 6,200 home fires from 2004-2008 while charcoal grills averaged 1,300 home fires. Grill fires cause more than $80 million in property damage and cause 18,600 people to visit the emergency room for grilling-related injuries. So the next time you fire up your grill, which may be this Fourth of July, remember to follow these simple tips to ensure a safe experience for everyone.
