HSD's Ann Gibbons Selected as a North County Inc. Public Service Award Recipient

The Hazelwood School District Board of Education member is among four selected to receive the award.

Ann Gibbons is in her 11th term as a board member on the Hazelwood School District. She was elected in 1981 and has served in her capacity for more than 30 years. Treasurer of the the board, Gibbons has actively volunteered with PTA for more than 40 years, has more than 45 years of experience as a volunteer with Girl Scouts, and was a Boy Scout troop organizer for 12 years. One achievement of which she is most proud is being the coordinator for the Youth for Understanding (YFU) International Exchange Program for 25 years. For that she earned the YFU Volunteer Excellence Award, and has won many awards throughout the years including last year's Missouri School Boards’ Association FutureBuilders Foundation Paul Morris Community Service Award…

The Missouri School Boards’ Association FutureBuilders Foundation has named the 30-year board member an award recipient.

Imagine bright lights, the chatter of educators and the excitement of an awards ceremony. Then picture Hazelwood School District (HSD) board treasurer, Ann Gibbons in attendance waiting to hear if she is about to win one of most important awards for which a board of education member could be nominated. Anyone who knows Gibbons understands her demeanor and constant state of calm. For her to stop and speak means only words of wisdom will be heard. HSD Board Member, Ann Gibbons, Finalist for the Paul Morris Community Service Award

The Missouri School Boards’ Association FutureBuilders Foundation has named the 30 year board member an award finalist. The winner will be announced tonight.

The Missouri School Boards’ Association FutureBuilders Foundation has named Hazelwood School District board treasurer, Ann Gibbons, a finalist for the Paul Morris Community Service Award. Gibbons, a 30 year HSD Board of Education member, is one of 10 regional finalists statewide. The winner will be announced at the MSBA Leadership Summit Banquet on tonight. The Paul Morris Community Service Award was established by MSBA FutureBuilders to honor the memory of Paul Morris, a school board member from Mt. Vernon, who was serving as president of MSBA when he passed away on February 2, 2009. The recipient of the Paul Morris Community Service Award will receive a $1,000 individual award and an additional $1,000 award to be used by his/her school …

Curry Brings Fresh Perspective, Inner Knowledge of Schools to HSD Board of Education

School board candidate Nita Curry wants to increase rigor of classes and improve North County's image.

Nita Curry said she couldn’t hold a candle to one candidate when it came to academic degrees and accomplishments--two of her opponents are former principals in the Hazelwood School District (HSD). But Curry, 48, said she does bring something the Hazelwood School District Board of Education needs the most. “I walk the halls, I know the teachers, I see things that students are dealing with,” said Curry, a past PTA president for Russell Elementary School and current substitute teacher in several HSD schools. She is also on the district’s technology advisory and scholarship committees. “I feel like what I’m bringing to the table is a totally new, fresh perspective,” she said. Woods Wants Solid Finances, Alternative School for Hazelwood School District

Charles Woods, one of two incumbents seeking re-election to the HSD Board of Education, has worked in education for 34 years.

Keeping the Hazelwood School District's finances in order and establishing an alternative school are among Charles “Chuck” Woods’ priorities. “We need to make sure we make every dollar count,” Woods said. Woods, 73, is one of four candidates running for three seats on the Hazelwood Board of Education in the April 5 election. The others are Ann Gibbons, Brenda Youngblood and Nita Curry. Gibbons and Woods are incumbents. A third incumbent, Diane Dowdy, decided not to seek re-election. Woods was a principal in the Hazelwood School District (HSD) for 34 years, serving at Lusher, Coldwater and Barrington elementary schools before retiring. Youngblood Wants to Focus on Student Achievement, Work Force Readiness

Brenda Youngblood said her priorities are improving student performance and helping students to be active members of the future workforce. Youngblood is one of four candidates running for three seats on the Hazelwood School District's Board of Education in the April 5 election. The others are Ann Gibbons, Charles “Chuck” Woods and Nita Curry. Gibbons and Woods are incumbents. A third incumbent, Diane Dowdy, decided not to seek re-election. Youngblood served in the district for 22 years as a principal at Keeven and McCurdy elementary schools. She worked for the Hazelwood School District for 37 years all together. Gibbons Wants to Focus on Raising Student Achievement, Test Scores

Ann Gibbons is one of four candidates in the race for three Hazelwood School District Board of Education seats.

Ann Gibbons said the Hazelwood School District’s (HSD) main priority should be obvious. During a recent candidate forum, Gibbons said the district must improve on teaching reading, math and science because that’s what the state testing and accreditation process focuses on. “We have to bring up the test scores of the kids who score below the state average on the MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) tests,” Gibbons said. “We don’t have any accreditation problems right now, but you can’t coast along, resting on your laurels.
