Hazelwood West Loses District Soccer Crown to Pattonville

Hazelwood West, which finished second to Pattonville in the Suburban North Conference and in districts for the second straight year, ended the season with a 14-9 record.

It was a tough one for Hazelwood West High School against Pattonville High School in Friday's MSHSAA Class 3 District 5 girls soccer championship game. "One of our gameplans was to get after (the Wildcats) early," Pattonville head coach Tom Iffrig said. "Even at the beginning of the game, our goal was to score in the first five minutes. "With us beating them the first time around, we thought if we scored early, it's going to kind of break their back." That plan sure worked well, as West could hardly get anything going at all offensively against the Pattonville Pirates; especially with the team's goal scoring dynamo Kailey Utley. She admitted she sometimes uses an unusual tactic when she makes her move toward the opposing goal. "Sometimes I…

Hazelwood West Softball Winning Streak Snapped In 9-0 Loss

Wildcats manage just two hits in rainy loss to Ft. Zumwalt South, which has now won six straight.

With Fort Zumwalt South having won five straight games, and Hazelwood West High School having won its games this week by a combined 41-0 score, the Bulldogs and Wildcats were easily two of the hottest teams going in St. Louis area girls softball. On Friday afternoon, those two teams met in a non-conference game at Hazelwood West High School, with the winner laying claim to its first perfect week of the season, and the loser having its hot streak officially put on ice. As it turned out, it was Zumwalt South junior pitcher Maddie Bradley who chilled out the Hazelwood West bats, holding the Wildcats to just two hits in a 9-0 win for the Bulldogs. “We have two very solid pitchers, and Maddie did a great job for us today,” said Zumwalt South …

Hazelwood West Loses Suburban North Softball Opener At Ritenour

Wildcats rallied twice in late innings to take the lead, but couldn't in a 10-9 loss to the Huskies.

OVERLAND – In the moments following Tuesday’s Suburban North Conference girls softball opener, Hazelwood West High School head coach Jack Scanio could only shake his head and smile. And even though his Wildcats had just comeback from 6-3 and 8-6 deficits to take a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh, the team blew that advantage in the bottom half of the inning. Even with Hazelwood West suffering the 10-9 loss to league rival Ritenour High School, Scanio wasn’t angry at all. West High's head man had a mood was much closer to reflective. “You can’t get mad,” Scanio said. “This is high school. We’re going to make some mistakes sometimes. If we never made mistakes, they’d call us professionals.” From the mistakes of which Scanio spoke, the …

Hazelwood West Wildcats Give Up Walk-Off Win to DeSoto in Season Opener

Wildcats led 6-0 and 7-6, but couldn't hold off hard-charging Dragons.

BALLWIN – Sometimes softball isn’t a fair game. That point was proven on Monday, when the Hazelwood West High School softball team met up with De Soto High in the first round of the Parkway Tournament at the Ballwin Athletic Association. West High sophomore Alex Linck, an all-Suburban North Conference player last year, gave a fantastic performance in the 2011 season opener. She had two key hits, scored a run and had two RBIs, in what seemed like a certain Wildcat win. Unfortunately, somebody forgot to tell that to the De Soto team, which despite fielding a team full of freshman, rallied back from 6-0 and 7-6 deficits. De Soto scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh off Linck, who’d come in as a relief pitcher, to hand the Wildcats an …
