Hazelwood's David Phelps Back to Long Relief

NY Yankees pitcher David Phelps, a Hazelwood native, has been moved back to the bullpen following Andy Pettitte's return to the rotation.

David Phelps has been moved back to the bullpen following Andy Pettitte's return to the rotation. Phelps, the Hazelwood West graduate, made his first starting appearance on May 3 against the Royals in Kansas City. To most baseball connoisseurs it was the obvious move due to Pettitte's return. Phelps will slide back into a long relief role, according to Roto World. Bleeding Yankee Blue senior writer Mikey Blue said Phelps should be commended for stepping up the the mound. "David Phelps did a tremendous job for the Yankees, answering their call for a starter after Freddy Garcia really just couldn't get it together this season as a starter," he said on his May 14 blog. "Look, that's why Phelps is there, a starter himself and reliable, it was …

Hazelwood's Yankees Pitcher David Phelps Gets His Starting Shot

The Hazelwood native who is a New York Yankees relief pitcher will move to the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation to replace Freddy Garcia, until Andy Pettitte is ready to reclaim that spot. Phelps will start Thursday against the Kansas City Royals.

It was only a matter of time. That's what you see on most sports blogs about Hazelwood native and New York Yankees relief pitcher David Phelps. It was only a matter of time before the early season struggles of Yankees starters Phil Hughes and Freddy Garcia forced manger Joe Girardi to change things up a bit. And boy is Hazelwood proud of the changes Girardi's made. Phelps, who has already faced every St. Louis boy's idol for at least the last decade and come out victorious, will start Thursday's game against the Kansas City Royals. He pitched against Albert Pujols and his Angels without breaking a sweat or allowing him to score. Phelps arrived in Missouri Wednesday afternoon ahead of the club, and expects at least 25 family members and …

Hazelwood Native and Yankee, David Phelps, Faces Albert Pujols

Phelps, who graduated from Hazelwood West High School, pitched five innings of the New York Yankees game against the Angels on Saturday.

Hazelwood native David Phelps experienced what could be considered just about any St. Louisans ultimate dream—that is if they have a decent pitch. As if living out life as a New York Yankee relief pitcher isn't enough for the Hazelwood West High School alum, Phelps faced one of the St. Louis Cardinals' most infamous exes, Albert Pujols, on Saturday. According to MLB.com, he stood exactly 60 feet, six inches from Albert Pujols and told the media outlet that he's been "rooting for (Pujols)" as long as he can remember. Phelps, a 25-year-old rookie, stood tall and of course Pujols made contact but didn't get on base any of the three times Phelps pitched to him. There was a fly to center, a fly to deep left in the sixth, and a liner in the …

Can the Cardinals Repeat as World Series Champions?

The St. Louis Cardinals look to begin their title-defense today when they kickoff the regular season against the Miami Marlins.

Today's Major League Baseball's official Opening Day, considered by thousands of St. Louisans as an unofficial holiday. And while the St. Louis Cardinals' home opener is really where it's at, that's not stopping us from getting into the baseball mood!  There's no shortage of story lines for the 2012 Cardinals as they look to defend last season's World Series Championship when the season kicks off today against the Miami Marlins.  Related: Update your Facebook Timeline cover photo with an image that captures your loyalty for the Redbirds. The team is missing perhaps three of its biggest names of the past decade in manager Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan—both of whom retired—and, of course, Albert Pujols, who signed with the Los …

In the most recent ESPN magazine, he at least gave STL its props, but said it was a business decision. I don't think he's enough to turn around the Angels.   more ›

Albert Pujols' Contract Could Buy...

Now that we're losing Cardinals' first baseman Albert Pujols to Los Angeles for an estimated $250 million, 10-year contract, we wondered what you could buy for that.

The news we were all dreading has broken: Albert Pujols is leaving. Word from media reports flying around the Internet is that the Cardinals slugger is going to the Los Angeles Angels for a 10-year, $250 million deal. That beat the Cardinals last offer to Pujols, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "The Cardinals' modified proposal was believed to be worth a potential $220 million for up to 10 years; however, only nine years are guaranteed, according to a source familiar with the bid." And ESPN.com's report said the Cards best offer would have made Pujols the fourth-highest paid first baseman in the Major Leagues. So, $250 million? That's a lot of scratch. In the 1960s, you could have built more than 16 Gateway Arches for that much …

I so agree. He was not a true Cardinal. Very greedy, he belongs elsewhere. He did not help us out that much in the playoffs and world series anyway. We have our hometown Freese!! We will do just fine without him. Infact, I would love to see us win the world series again next year!!   more ›
