There's only a few days left before Hazelwood West High School senior Maria Dlabick will be calling herself a college freshman. In the fall, she will attend college at the Kansas City Art Institute as a President’s Scholarship recipient, a four-year award. The scholarship is based on her academic performance and her skills as an artist, according to a Hazelwood School District statement. Dlabick has a 3.75 GPA. She scored 31 on the ACT college entrance exam. She is involved in the Crafts and Fiber Club and Anime Club, and she is a member of the National Art Honor Society. All Day Oday: Another Brilliant Season at the Plate for the Wildcats

Coming off an all-conference junior season, senior Oday Al-Yatim has improved his numbers in every way, and leads the Hazelwood West Wildcats in batting average, hits, RBIs, and on-base percentage.

Even after delivering a first-team all-conference season last year as the starting catcher for the Hazelwood West High School varsity baseball team, senior Oday Al-Yatim just wasn't satisfied. Nevermind he hit .342 and had 17 runs batted in, for a team that made it to the district championship game. He was also selected as the designated hitter for the Suburban North Conference all-star team last year. Al-Yatim spent the entire offseason believing he didn't really play his best his junior year, and that he needed to have a big senior season if he really wanted to showcase his talents. "That's just the kind of kid Oday is," said Hazelwood West head coach Matt McClellan. "He's an unbelievable hard-worker. He works on every aspect of his game…

HSD Goes Smoke and Tobacco Free

The Hazelwood School District has adopted a new policy in which all schools, campuses and district vehicles will now be smoke and tobacco free.

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) officially no longer accepts any form of smoking or tobacco on its premises from adults or students. The district adopted a tobacco free policy earlier in the year, which now prohibits staff and faculty from smoking in district vehicles, outside of school buildings, away from students in outside areas, and on anything deemed Hazelwood School District property. This includes when school is not in session. The same rules apply to students and HSD visitors. During a February board of education meeting the issue was discussed deeply and at that time, Diane Livingston, president of the Hazelwood National Education Association, requested  the board of education pull the matter from voting so staff and faculty …

I'm happy this passed. I know it's going to be tough to enforce. When I was in high school students would sneak in to the bathrooms to smoke and so they had to start locking the bathroom doors during class. Good concept though.   more ›

No Student Transfers into the Hazelwood School District, So Now What?

Tuesday's ruling in the school transfers case formally known as Turner v. Clayton said students living in unaccredited school districts can't attend schools in accredited districts for free. So what happens to Hazelwood's wait list?

Some parents and teachers have expressed on Hazelwood Patch and its Facebook page agreement with Tuesday's ruling in the school transfers case formally known as Turner v. Clayton.  Judge David Lee Vincent III aligns with the Clayton Schools' position on student transfers, and said students living in unaccredited school districts can't attend schools in accredited districts for free. Still, parents are wondering what that really means for Hazelwood School District (HSD), which has more than 300 students from the Riverview Gardens School District (RGSD) and St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS)—both of which are unaccredited—on a wait list to attend district schools. The answer is: there is no longer a wait list. "Basically we no longer have to …
