The Better Business Bureau warns people are falsely posing as students of L’École Culinaire in an effort to get victims to buy phony magazine subscriptions.
St. Louis area residents and those living in St. Louis County areas such as the City of Hazelwood should be alert for a new door-to-door magazine sales scam involving young people posing as students of L’École Culinaire, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns. A homeowner in the 5400 block of Pernod Avenue, in the city’s North Hampton neighborhood, said she was approached by a young man and a woman last week who asked her to buy magazine subscriptions to be sent to servicemen and women overseas. They told her that they were enrolled at the well-known culinary school in St. Louis County and were raising money to further their studies in Italy. The man had wounds to his face, eye, tongue and back.
A Hazelwood woman was charged with stabbing her husband in the face and back Sunday in the 300 block of Chalmette Drive. Ella D. Smith, 59, faces second-degree domestic assault charges after her husband told police she stabbed him. He had cuts on his face, eye, tongue and had a puncture wound on his back, according to a Hazelwood Police report. A witness told police he saw Smith strike her husband in the face. Bond was set at $25,000. Smith was in St. Louis County jail on Tuesday.

Police said the defendant grabbed the electronic item at LaQuinta Inn in Hazelwood last August.
A Hazelwood man was charged May 9 in St. Louis County Circuit Court with stealing. Hazelwood Police said in a report that Howard Jenkins, 20, of the 6700 block of Mathew Street in Northwoods, grabbed an iPad from a victim at 4 a.m. Aug. 28 at LaQuinta Inn, 318 Taylor Road. After 26 years of service, Chief Carl Wolf will retire on July 1.
After a career spanning 42 years in law enforcement, of which 35 years have been spent as a police chief, Hazelwood Police Chief Carl Wolf has announced his intentions to retire effective July 1, 2012 Tuesday. Wolf has served as the City of Hazelwood's Chief of Police for 26 years. A Hazelwood man, his mother and sister were charged Thursday in St. Charles County Circuit Court with manufacturing and possessing methamphetamine and endangering a child. Jonathan Trendley, 29, of the 700 block of Hazelvalley Drive in Hazelwood, Kathryn Roloff, 52, and Kaylyn Clark, 17, both of the 2600 block of Falcons Way in St. Charles, were all charged with making and possessing meth and endangering a child. St. Charles County Sheriff’s detectives followed Trendley Wednesday to a St. Charles address where he traded $50 and one-fourth of a gram of meth for two boxes of pseudoephedrine pills, according to a sheriff’s department report. A crash Friday at 4 p.m. on St Charles Rock Road (Hwy 180) and I-270 caused two North County residents to cross paths. According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, 25-year-old Hazelwood resident Shalandra Westbrook was stopped and yielding to traffic. At the same time, 66-year-old Florissant resident Joseph Bayne, failed to observe Westbrook's stopped 2011 Ford F-150 hitting the truck in the rear with his 2005 Chrysler 300. Westbrook was taken to DePaul Hospital with minor injuries. Both drivers reported damage to their vehicles; however, both vehicles were driven from the accident scene, according to the report.

The St. Louis County prosecutor has charged Kelvin Purnell, 51, with a trio of felonies related to an armed standoff in Berkeley, near Hazelwood Thursday afternoon. Purnell faces charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and resisting arrest for the incident at his home in the 6700 block of Carol Lee Drive, according to Missouri Case.net. His bond is set at $125,000 cash only. The incident, which lasted about five hours, began just before noon after a social worker along with a police officer arrived at the home to check on Purnell's elderly father. A 51-year-old man who barricaded himself inside a home near Hazelwood after shots were fired there, surrendered to police about 5:15 p.m. The incident prevented officials at a nearby Berkeley Middle School from allowing children to leave for the day. I will say since I moved back to Hazelwood in 2010 I've gotten three. One in Florissant, one in Hazelwood and one in St. Louis City. I fought two and they were thrown out and paid one because the video showed that I did commit the offense, Remember you have to stop at the white line even when turning right or you are susceptible to a ticket.   more ›
