Whiz Kid: Fundraising Tour de Cure

This Hazelwood North Middle School eighth-grader competed in many cycling events this summer.

This week's Whiz Kid is known for having ‘legs of iron.’ He took place in more than five cycling events and competitions this summer and raised money for a good cause.

  • Whiz Kid's Names: Austin Gomes
  • Whiz Kid's School/Church/Community Center:
  • Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Austin raised nearly $600 for the 2011 Tour de Cure in June.
  • Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: As last school year ended, Austin prepared to ride in the Tour de Cure, the American Diabetes Association’s annual charity cycling event to raise money to cure diabetes. He has participated in it since he was 7. “I love the training, the wind-in-your-face feeling during racing. It’s fun,” Austin said in a statement.
