Hazelwood West Soccer Takes Back-to-Back Suburban North Titles with 3-0 Win Over Pattonville

The win against the Pirates on Friday means the Wildcats go unbeaten in league play for the second straight year.

The boys soccer team reached one of its primary goals of the season Friday afternoon when it completed an unbeaten season in Suburban North Conference play. The Wildcats won their second straight league title, thanks to a 3-0 win over rival .

“I’m really proud of what these guys did out here this season,” said West's coach Jason Sellers. “We’ve been on a good roll.”

And it’s getting close to becoming a decade-long roll for the Wildcats, who have won the Suburban North boys soccer championship six times in the last eight years under Sellers.

During that time, West has been nearly unbeaten against conference opponents, winning all but five games in eight years and winning all but two in the last five.

“I’d have to look it up to know for sure, but it’s some kind of insane record like that,” Sellers said. “I’m proud of it though."

"It’s a testament to the kind of kids we’ve had out here and the work they put in to be a good team,” he said.

It took the Wildcats the entire first half to figure out what they needed to do against Pattonville Friday.

But once the team did figure out how to attack, West went on a rampage, scoring three times in the second half to turn a spirited and even matchup into another win for the defending league champion Wildcats.

“It was actually a pretty boring talk at halftime,” Sellers said. “We just talked about doing a few things different, and the team (agreed) and just went out and did it.”

Senior Luke Promaroli got the Wildcats started. He attained his sixth goal of the season five minutes into the second half when he finished off a setup by fellow senior and likely Suburban North Conference Player of the Year Jeff Cameron. The play made the score 1-0.

Cameron then added a goal of his own, his 28th of the season, a few minutes later. Suddenly, West had a near insurmountable two-goal lead on the Pirates.

“We’ve talked about it a lot. He’s just a special player,” Sellers said, referring to Cameron.

Senior Ramon Perez finished off the scoring a bit later with his second goal of the season on a shot from nearly 30 yards out that sailed over Pattonville goalkeeper Erik Solorio’s head and landed in the back of the Pirate net.

The victory raised West’s overall season record to 17-6, and ensured the Wildcats a No. 1 seed for the Missouri Class 3 District 6 playoffs, which begin Nov. 1. Those will be held at the .

West will play in its first round game that day, with the opening kickoff set for 5 p.m.

The Wildcats final home game of the season is Monday when West will honor its 10 seniors and their families with a pregame ceremony and celebration before the team’s 4:15 p.m. game against Troy Buchanan High School.
