Hazelwood Joins Missouri's Eat Smart in Parks Initiative

It is a statewide effort aimed at promoting healthier eating options in Missouri's state and local parks, and concession stands.

The City of Hazelwood's Parks and Recreation Division is joining the Eat Smart in Parks statewide initiative.

Eat Smart in Parks is a statewide effort aimed at promoting healthier eating options in Missouri’s state and local parks.

Upon opening for the summer season, the concession stands at White Birch Bay Aquatic Center will now offer fresh fruits, dairy products and juice boxes in an effort to help visitors make healthier food choices. Tim Davidson, Hazelwood's communications coordinator said this an active method to help curb childhood obesity and teach children about choosing healthy options.

Davidson said the city will make efforts to buy foods produced locally. The concession menus will continue to feature nachos and other popular items, as well.

Eat Smart in Parks is a Missouri Council for Activity and Nutrition (MoCAN) initiative. This effort includes the development of a model Eat Smart in Parks policy that guides parks in serving healthier options, training for state and local parks to assist them with using the guidelines and materials to promote healthier items.
