High School Sports Wrap: West Soccer Still on Hot Streak

Wildcat soccer players Nick Ehlers and Matt Leinberger named this week's athletes of the week.

Jason Sellers is more than pleased with his .

But there is another reason Sellers is all smiles these days.

"Not only are we winning, but we're getting better each match," the veteran coach said. "That's important."

The Wildcats have posted five successive shutouts after a season-opening 3-1 loss to Southern Boone. They have outscored the opposition 16-0 during the run.

Senior goalkeepers Nick Ehlers and Matt Leinberger have combined for the clean sheets. Ehlers leads the way with three solo blankings.

"Nick has become a real presence in goal," Sellers said.

Seniors Jeff Cameron and Luke Promaroli have led the attack. Cameron, a striker, has six goals and five assists. Promaroli has three goals, as does Kris Ross.

 

(1-4) posted its first win of the season with a 4-2 triumph over Maplewood-Richmond Heights last week. Nabil Benchebane led the winners with three goals.

(1-5) has dropped five in a row after a season-opening home-field win over Collinsville. The Stars have been outscored 18-2 during the skid.

Pattonville (1-1) beat (1-4) on Wednesday 3-0.

McCluer North Softball Continues to Roll

The Stars improved to 6-3 with a 14-2 drubbing of St. Charles Wednesday.

Tynai Burrow led the way with five RBIs. Shannon Murphy drove home two runs and leads the team with six RBI.

on Thursday. Natalie Spain, Shelby Howard and Emily Rousseau had two hits each for the Wildcats.

Pattonville (3-5) knocked off Hazelwood Central 12-2 Thursday. Kristen Hannah drove in three runs, and pitcher Skyler Rodgers picked up the win.

McCluer (1-6) posted its first win with a 22-2 thumping of Hazelwood East on Tuesday.

McCluer, Hazelwood West Remain Unbeaten in Volleyball

The Comets moved to 2-0 with a thrilling three-set win over McCluer South/Berkeley on Thursday.

Sherise Williams lead the attack with 22 kills.

(2-0) is off to a quick start thanks to the play of setter Amanda Molinari and hitter Sara Gregor.

Pattonville (1-2) knocked off Hazelwood Central 25-14, 25-14 on Wednesday. Christian Johnson, Katie Mertz and Madi Maguire led the way. 

The Hawks are 0-2.

McCluer North has yet to win a match at 0-3.

Match of the Week

The Hazelwood West soccer team faced its biggest test of the season when it met up with traditional power Trinity Catholic in a non-league match Monday night. The Wildcats came out victorious with a 4-1 win.

Athletes of the Week

Hazelwood West's dynamic duo of senior keepers Nick Ehlers and Matt Leinberger have combined to record five successive shutouts, one of the longest current streaks in state.

"They've both really stepped up their games," coach Jason Sellers said.
