Stallions Baseball Club Puts Beat Down On American National

Team from St. Peters lashes 17 hits, and scores in every inning but one, in 15-2 win over Eagles

The American National Eagles took one on the chin at the hands of the Stallions Baseball Club, in an important St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association (SLABA League game Wednesday night at the Hazelwood Sports Complex.

The red-hot Stallions, a team of recent high school all-stars from St. Peters and Wentzville, who came into the night in sole possession of first place in the SLABA League standings, banged out 17 hits against American National pitching, and cruised their way to a 15-2 road victory.

“Us and these guys (American National), we battle every year,” Stallions head coach Scott Seddon said. “It might’ve been 15-2 tonight, but next week when we play them again, it could be 2-2 going into the 12th inning. It’s always a battle when we play these guys.”

For Tuesday’s battle though, it seemed it was the Stallions that were more prepared to win the war.

Especially at the plate, where every Stallion starter reached base at least once, and scored at least one run.

Leadoff hitter Wade Rothermich, an all-conference player from Fort Zumwalt North High, was one of the primary catalysts. He had four hits and scored three runs to help spark the Stallions attack.

Fort Zumwalt East High teammates Branden Sugar and Brad Chapman also made major contributions with three hits apiece and at least one run scored and at least one RBI apiece.

“We’ve been getting some really clutch hitting,” Seddon said. “We’ve got guys all up and down the lineup, that if somebody makes a mistake out there, we’ve got guys coming right behind them to clean it up.”

American National didn’t help itself in the field either.

Among the miscues, the Eagles committed four errors, had a key misplay on a fly ball. The team also allowed the Stallions to steal 11 bases, including four Rothermich took.

It appeared American National wasn't able to play sharp in the field at all, and the Stallions took advantage.

“That was no fun at all,” American National head coach Bill Becher said. “There was no intensity, no fight. We’ve got a bunch of introverted kids, and what we need is somebody that’s (got more energy and spirit).

"I want guys that when you’re losing like that, will do something about it.”

Stallion starting pitcher Joe Siegler, another Fort Zumwalt North product, who recently signed to play his college ball at John Wood Community College in Quincy, IL, was also fantastic on the mound for the Stallions.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound righty pitched a complete game, and allowed just two runs on six hits, in a game that was called after six innings.

“Joe had a good high school season, but he’s coming off a shoulder thing,” Seddon said. “So we’ve kind of held him back. Tonight was the first night where we told him, here’s the ball, now go get ‘em. And you saw what he did.”

junior Shane Olmstead took the loss for American National. He lasted a little less than two innings and gave up the first eight runs of the game.

Senior Oday Al-Yatim, another Hazelwood West product, led the charge at the plate with two hits, as did Pattonville senior Andrew Aubuchon.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t nearly enough against a Stallions club that boasts a 12-3 record this summer, has won five games in a row, and owns a perfect 7-0 mark in SLABA League play this year.

American National, on the other hand, fell to 14-14 this summer, and is tied for fourth place in league play with a 4-3 record.
