No Starting Position for Kyle McClellan, Out Again with Shoulder Injury

McClellan was scratched from a scheduled appearance against Seattle on Sunday, but plans to stick it out as a Ranger.

There have been a series of unfortunate events for non-roster right-hander Kyle McClellan in the past year as he has left the St. Louis Cardinals and joined the Texas Rangers' minor league team.

McClellan was scheduled to pitch against Seattle on Sunday but is suffering from a strained latissimus muscle in the right shoulder, according to The Dallas Morning News Rangers blog. McClellan will require four weeks of recovery time before beginning a throwing program.

The injury was announced four days after McClellan threw two scoreless innings against the Brewers on Tuesday.

McClellan experienced discomfort during a bullpen session on Friday and went for an MRI test, which found no structural damage, according to the blog.

McClellan has decided to stick it out with the Rangers on a minor league deal and develop the shoulder.

"Kyle will remain in camp," assistant general manager Thad Levine said in a statement. "We had very productive conversations with Kyle and his agent about the prognosis for him for the future and he wants to stay part of this franchise moving forward.

"We anticipate him to rehab with us and make an impact with us, just maybe a little bit later than we anticipated."

The North County native and Hazelwood West Alum signed on with the Texas Rangers' minor league team in January, and it seemed his pitching health was on the rise.

Early in February he was announced as a candidate for two spots on the Texas Rangers’ staff: fifth stater and long reliever.

Just two weeks later, McClellan's shoulder began causing him problems with soreness.

A healthy McClellan posted a 3.69 ERA in 378 innings while playing for the Cardinals. He went right into the minor leagues for the Cards upon high school graduation.

McClellan underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum and shoulder capsulitis in July. Texas Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said the club’s medical staff does not believe the current problem is related to the surgery.
