MICDS Survives Vianney Onslaught, Snags 3-3 Tie In Late-Night Hockey Matchup

Goalkeeper Cameron Gornet had a spectacular night, with 37 saves to keep the Rams close, while teammates Brandon Klar and Matthew Myer had a hand in all three goals in a 3-3 tie against the Golden Griffins.

AFFTON -- A late-night Mid-States Hockey Association matchup of two clubs trying desperately to get back to the .500 mark ended in a stalemate, Monday at the Affton Ice Rink, as MICDS and Vianney played to a 3-3 tie.

The Rams, who came in with a 3-4-1 mark on the year, but were 2-1-1 in their last four games, endured a barrage of shots and scoring chances from the high-flying Golden Griffins, who entered the night with a 2-6-2 record.

But MICDS was able to withstand the Vianney onslaught, thanks to junior goalkeeper Cameron Gornet, who made 37 saves, including a pair of dynamite stops late in the third period to preserve the tie.

Offensively, forwards Brandon Klar and Matthew Myer each had a hand in all three MICDS goals, with Klar registering a goal and two assists and Myer assisting on all three scores, while sophomore Charles Combs snagged his team-leading 10th goal of the season that gave the Rams a brief 3-2 lead early in the third.

MICDS actually entered the third period trailing 2-1, after a pair of Vianney goals by Nick Allgeyer and Jack Kemper, gave the Golden Griffins the lead in the second period.

But Klar, Myer, and Combs pulled off a pretty passing play less than 30 seconds into the third to tie the score at 2.

Combs found Myer with a backhand pass into the slot. Myer then whipped a nifty no-look pass to Klar inside the left circle, and Klar then slammed one past Vianney goalie Nick Bonastia at 14:34 of the third to make it 2-2.

About three minutes later, Combs got a feed from Klar and Myer, and tipped it past Bonastia to make it 3-2 Rams.

At that point, it looked like Gornet and the Rams might escape with a win, despite getting outshot by the Golden Griffins 40-18.

But Vianney's Donovan Psaris finished off a rush by teammate Nick Estopare, with 7:32 left, for his second goal of the season to tie the game at 3.

Gornet, who was clearly the defensive star of the game, almost made the offensive play of the game as well, when he flipped an outlet pass to Combs that set up a breakaway with less than 30 seconds left in the game.

Combs somehow managed to get behind the Vianney defense, and raced in up the left side with no one between him and Bonastia.

But the Vianney senior was able to knock away Combs' blistering wrist shot, making sure the game ended in a tie.

The Griffins (2-6-3) will be back in action on Saturday, when they'll play Oakville in another late-night affair, at the South County (Kennedy) complex at 9:15 p.m.

MICDS' next game is also on Saturday. The Rams (3-4-2) will play Webster Groves at the Webster Groves Ice Rink at 8:45 p.m.
