Hazelwood West Takes Third Place in Wildcat Classic with 5-0 Win Over Rival Hazelwood Central

Senior striker Jeff Cameron's hat trick leads Wildcats to big win over the Hawks.

The Wildcats claimed third place in the midseason Wildcat Classic Soccer Tournament, thanks to a 5-0 win over district archrival Hazelwood Central, Friday evening at the West High soccer field.

Senior striker Jeff Cameron was the star again for the Wildcats, netting a hat trick, his third three-plus goal game of the season, and giving him a Suburban North Conference-leading 14 scores on the season, as West convincingly took apart the Hawks.

“He’s a special player,” said West head coach Jason Sellers. “Seems like I say it all the time, but he’s just a dynamic scorer.

"He just has this way of finding open space, and then suddenly the balls on his foot, and next thing you know, it’s in the back of the net.”

And that’s exactly how Cameron scored all three of his goals on Friday.

In the first half, he outran the Central defense to a long pass by teammate Brendan Temm, then flipped a quick little shot past Central goalkeeper Josh Gonzales.

That was West’s second goal of the day, after Jamie Lawrence scored for the Wildcats on a similar play earlier in the half.

Then in the second half, Cameron took a quick re-start pass from Lawrence and buried another shot, this from point-blank range, past Gonzales to make it 3-0 West.

 But the 5-foot-11, 175-pound speedster wasn’t done.

Later in the half, he followed teammate John Hoemeyer’s saved shot, with a rebound blast that no goalie could’ve stopped, for his 14th goal of the year and 44th of his varsity career.

“That’s my game, that’s what I do,” Cameron said. “They gave me some chances, me and my teammates that also scored today. And we just took advantage of them.”

West’s Joe Withington scored the other goal and goalkeeper Nick Ehlers got the shutout for the Wildcats, who improved their season record to 9-3.
