Hazelwood West Softball Winning Streak Snapped In 9-0 Loss

Wildcats manage just two hits in rainy loss to Ft. Zumwalt South, which has now won six straight.

With having won five straight games, and having won its games this week by a combined 41-0 score, the Bulldogs and Wildcats were easily two of the hottest teams going in St. Louis area girls softball.

On Friday afternoon, those two teams met in a non-conference game at Hazelwood West High School, with the winner laying claim to its first perfect week of the season, and the loser having its hot streak officially put on ice.

As it turned out, it was Zumwalt South junior pitcher Maddie Bradley who chilled out the Hazelwood West bats, holding the Wildcats to just two hits in a 9-0 win for the Bulldogs.

“We have two very solid pitchers, and Maddie did a great job for us today,” said Zumwalt South head coach Christy Pohlman. “She works hard. She’s always trying to improve herself, so that was very positive for us.”

Bradley, who works as Zumwalt South’s No. 2 starter, behind ace senior Kayla Ratliff, improved her personal pitching record to 2-2 this season, while the Bulldogs raised their overall 2011 record to 10-7.

The Bulldogs began the year 4-7, but now have one of the area’s longest current winning streaks thanks to six straight victories.

“We were just talking about that, and I don’t know (how many in a row),” Pohlman said. “We’re trying not to focus on that, just because we don’t want to jinx ourselves.”

Hazelwood West, which had beaten rival Hazelwood East 24-0 on Tuesday, and pounded 17-0 on Thursday, just couldn’t find its groove against Zumwalt South.

The Wildcats only managed a few baserunners the entire day, with the only hits coming on a one-out double by Tricia Heffner in the fourth inning, and a one-out double by Alex Linck in the sixth.

“They have a tough pitcher, and we have some pretty good hitters, but it was her day today,” said Hazelwood West coach Jack Scanio. “She throws strikes. She has a good variety of pitches and locations. And we hit a few balls hard, but they were right at people.”

The hitting stars of the day were Zumwalt South sophomore Hope Miller and senior Kayla Lockwood.

Both had four hits in the game, with Miller also delivering two RBIs, three stolen bases, and two runs scored, and Lockwood adding an RBI and a run scored of her own.

Teammate Mackenzie Peter also had a big day with three RBIs for the Bulldogs, who own sole possession of first place in the GAC North, and will put that position on the line on Monday, when they’ll take on 10-4 Warrenton (MO) at Zumwalt South at 4 p.m.

Hazelwood West will also return to conference action in the Suburban North this week. Tuesday, the Wildcats will host at 4 p.m.
