Open Enrollment: Missouri Supreme Court Reviewing School Transfers Law

The high court is reviewing who would be responsible for the tuition of transfer students.

This past week the Missouri Supreme Court had a second chance to hear about the controversial school transfer law.

The case began being heard on Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Currently, the state law says students of unaccredited school districts can transfer to better, neighboring accredited school districts with the home district footing the bill.

, mainly dealt with the question of whether accredited St. Louis County school districts, such as Hazelwood School District, would be required to enroll students who request a transfer from an unaccredited district.

At one point, HSD had more than 300 students on a list waiting to be accepted into schools, most of which would have come from St. Louis Metropolitan area schools Normandy and Riverview Gardens, which remain unaccredited school districts.

It has been a long journey for the case, which was sent to the state Supreme Court, and then back to circuit court.
