High School Sports Wrap: Wildcat Volleyball Remains Unbeaten in League Play

Pattonville's kicker Tyler Hach named "Athlete of the Week."

The McCluer North football team appears to have benefited from its painful 32-point season-opening loss to Jefferson City last month.

The Stars reeled off their third successive win on Saturday afternoon stunning previously unbeaten Lafayette 27-0 in a non-conference contest at McCluer North.     

"Everybody contributed and chipped in," said veteran coach Jim Schottmueller. "Great team effort."

The Stars' defense shut down the Lancers, who entered the game ranked seventh in the Class 6 state poll. Lafayette totaled 80 points in marching out to a 3-0 record. But North (3-1) put the clamps down on one of the top offenses in the area.

Senior running back Antwaun Williams led the attack with 142 yards rushing. Keith Smith added two scores and quarterback Galen Brown ran the offense perfectly. North scored two touchdowns in the final 2:45 of the opening half to take control.

Hazelwood Central (1-3) continued to struggle dropping a 47-0 decision to Kirkwood at Central on Saturday. McCluer (0-4) hung close to Ritenour before losing 21-14 over the weekend.     

(0-4) lost to Hazelwood East 34-10 on Saturday. The Wildcats have scored just 26 points this season. Pattonville beat Riverview Gardens 17-14 in overtime on Saturday for its first win of the season.       

 

PIRATES KICKER TYLER HACH NAMED ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
The Pattonville sophomore booted a 20-yard field goal in overtime to propel the Pirates to the victory.

Pattonville held a 14-0 lead before Riverview batted back in the second half. For his efforts, Hach was chosen as the Patch Athlete Of The Week.       

 

PIRATES SOFTBALL TEAM ROLLING AGAIN       
Pattonville reeled off three successive shutouts last week outscoring the opposition 38-0 along the way.

The Pirates (6-5 overall, 2-1 in conference play) beat Parkway Central 10-0 on Friday. They scored three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to win easily. Senior Mikala McGhee paces the offense with a .516 batting average and a team-high 14 RBI. Junior pitcher Skyler Rodgers is 3-2 with a 2.91 ERA.

McCluer North (8-4, 2-0) continued to roll with a pair of easy wins including a 15-0 trouncing of Hazelwood East on Thursday.

Hazelwood West (6-8, 3-1) won two of three games. The Wildcats crushed McCluer 17-0 on Thursday. McCluer (1-10, 1-2) has given up 160 runs in 11 games. Hazelwood Central (1-9, 1-3) has been outscored 81-27 this season.       

 

GAME OF THE WEEK       
McCluer North travels to Pattonville for a key Suburban North Conference softball game Thursday at 4 p.m. The teams have combined to win four of their first five league games.        

 

COMETS VOLLEYBALL TEAM ON A ROLL       
McCluer (6-3, 2-0), which got off to a 4-0 start, continues to play well following a 25-14, 25-17 win over Hazelwood East on Saturday.      The Comets are led by the senior trio of Sherise Williams, Alexis Armstead and Victoria Kyles. Williams had 15 kills against East. Armstead and Kyles added 14 service points.

McCluer also beat Riverview Gardens in two games on Saturday. in league play with a 25-20, 25-15 triumph over Hazelwood Central. The win was the fourth in a row for the Wildcats, who then had the streak snapped in their next match against Pacific.

Shannon Bolds and Sara Gregor led the way against Central. Pattonville (5-9-1, 2-0) has rebounded after losing five of its first six matches. The Pirates beat Hazelwood Central 25-13, 25-10 on Saturday. Samantha Callahan leads the team with 32 kills. Madi Maguire has a team-best 92 assists.

McCluer North (1-6, 1-1) and Hazelwood Central (0-9, 0-3) continue to struggle. The Hawks have lost 18 of 19 games.       

 

WEST SOCCER TEAM ON FIRE       
The with a 4-2 triumph over St. Charles West on Friday. Jeff Cameron led the way with two goals. Keeper Matt Leinberger made seven saves to record his second shutout of the season. Cameron, a senior, leads the team with 11 tallies.

McCluer (3-5, 0-0) has won two of its last three including a 2-1 win over Union on Friday. Nabil Benchabane scored both goals and leads the club with eight.

Pattonville (2-2, 1-0) fell to traditional power Vianney 5-0 on Thursday. Hazelwood Central (1-5, 0-1) has been outscored 23-5. McCluer North (1-6-1, 0-1) is winless in its last seven matches following a 1-0 season-opening win over Collinsville.

Pattonville edged Hazelwood West 213-227 in a girls golf match on Thursday. West senior Alicia Yn took medalist honors.
