Maryville University senior soccer player, Jena Casagrande, was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the week on Sept. 24.
Casagrande grew up in Florissant and attended Hazelwood West High School. Casagrande committed to Maryville University’s soccer program as a senior at West.
“Casagrande posted back-to-back shutouts in 220 minutes in the cage against McKendree and No. 19 Rockhurst last week,” said assistant commissioner Jeff Smith in a post on the GLVCSports.com site. “In Wednesday’s make-up contest from a postponed Sept. 7 game due to severe weather, Casagrande recorded three saves in a double-overtime scoreless tie against McKendree, a team that was 3-1 at the time and now 4-1-1 in GLVC play.”
Casagrande was the first Maryville student to win a weekly conference award in women’s soccer, Smith added.
During her career at Hazelwood West, Casagrande was a two-time all-conference selection, a second-team all-conference selection in her sophomore season and received honorable mention as an all-conference honoree during her freshman season. She was also a member of the 2008 District Champion team.
Casagrande’s not just an athlete; she’s also a scholar. At Hazelwood West, she received the All-Academic Athlete award for earning a 4.0 GPA and earned a Cum Laude award.
