Hazelwood West High School has a New Principal

Hazelwood School District Board of Education approves recommendation to hire Dennis Newell as the principal for Hazelwood West High School.

The (HSD) Board of Education recently approved a recommendation to hire Dennis Newell as the principal for . , the school’s current principal, announced his resignation in March and will leave the Wildcats at the end of this school year to lead at Pattonville High School.

Newell has more than 20 years of educational experience, serving the past nine years as the principal at Middletown High School (MHS) in Middletown, Ohio. He served six years as the assistant principal and taught social studies for seven years at Middletown High School.   

“Dennis Newell will be an excellent leader for Hazelwood West High School,” HSD Superintendent, Dr. Steve Price, said.  “He has extensive experience managing a large high school and improving student achievement.”

During his tenure as principal, the Ohio State Board of Education recognized MHS for “exceptional effort and success” in achieving a rating of effective on the state report card. Additionally, Standard & Poor’s recognized MHS as one of only 12 high schools statewide to significantly reduce the achievement gap.

Newell earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in secondary education from Miami University of Ohio. He earned a Master of Science Degree in education administration from the University of Dayton. He also holds an assistant superintendent certificate.

Newell will begin his new position at Hazelwood West High School this summer.
