Hazelwood School District Recycles 34,000 Pounds of Electronic Trash

HSD in partnership with Allied Waste held several e-waste recycling drives where the community could get rid of unwanted electronics.

Just about 34,803 pounds of electronic trash will not end up in an area landfill, and it because of the Hazelwood School Districts (HSD) efforts to encourage the community to consider recycling.

In an effort to make recycling more accessible to the community, events where held on three separate days, at three different Hazelwood schools.

“I am extremely pleased with the recycling turnout and the community helping to reduce its carbon footprint,” Kevin Cross, HSD director of purchasing and supplier diversity said in a statement.

Everyone was encouraged to drop off outdated, unused and unwanted electronics, which included anything with a plug or anything that used batteries.

At the end of the E-waste drive, the total weight of recycled items, are as follows:

  • Hazelwood Central High School- 8,349 pounds
  • Hazelwood East Middle School- 13,561 pounds
  • Armstrong Elementary- 12,893 pounds

HSD began housing recyling trash bins at all schools in 2011. The district also partnered with Allied Waste and the City of Hazelwood in November for a recycling drive at St. Louis Outlet Mall. That event coincided with the Keep America Beautiful’s America Recycles Day, which is held annually on November 15, and celebrates the benefits of recycling.
