Irish rebellion focus of lecture at UMSL

1916 was a pivotal year in the history and culture of Ireland. In Dublin, there was a violent uprising by people who wanted to end British rule in Ireland. At the same time, thousands of men were dying in World War I. The year ended with the first publication of James Joyce's "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man."

Irish scholar Nicholas Allen will give a lecture titled “1916 and After: Dublin, Empire, and Rebellion,” at 12:30 p.m. April 3 in room 331 of the Social Sciences & Business Building at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Allen is professor of english and director of the Willson Center of Humanities and Arts at the University of Georgia in Athens. Allen has published five books and is writing a cultural history of 1916 for Cambridge University Press.
