Education Brief: Feb. 15 Hazelwood School District Board of Education Meeting

First reading of revised school board policies heard and new district advocacy group introduced.

It was a full house at the Feb. 15 Hazelwood School District Board of Education meeting. Among the meeting's topics were first reading of 23 of the district's revised policies including:

  • privacy protection,
  • payment process,
  • workers' compensation,
  • suspension of professional staff members,
  • students discipline,
  • corporal punishment,
  • seclusion, isolation and restraint,
  • and student insurance and student allergy prevention response, among other things.

HSD Superintendent Dr. Steve Price, informed the crowd that the has an advocacy group, HSD Legislative Advocacy Committee, active with legislative session in Jefferson City regarding issues pertinent to the district including two very hot button issues, open enrollment and school funding.

"It's meeting to weigh in on exactly these kinds of issues that are facing the legislation right now," Price said. "Our committee will be taking a position on this...we encourage our community to get involved and write your opinion to the legislators."

Assistant Superintendent for Communications, Diana Gulotta said although the committee is not a lobbyist organization, it will help HSD create a legislative platform.
