13 Boy Scouts Earn Eagle Scout Rank in Hazelwood School District

Four Hazelwood West seniors were among this year honorees.

Students in the Hazelwood School District recently reached the highest honor bestowed upon a Boy Scout.

Thirteen high school and middle school boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this year, including four Hazelwood West seniors. Sean Butler, Troop 942; Paul Feldmann, Troop 921; Joseph Maltzmann, Troop 740; and Sean Owens, Troop 829 each earned the merit after meeting all requirements of the Boy Scouts of America.

“I’ve been in Boy Scouts since I was old enough to be a Cub Scout. I wanted to follow through with the whole scouting process. And now not only can I say I have, but I have the honor and privilege of calling myself an Eagle Scout,” Butler said in a press release.

In order to become an Eagle Scout, a scout must do a number of tasks, including progressing through five earlier ranks in order, earning 21 merit badges, including ones such as personal fitness, family life and citizenship in the world; six months in a troop leadership position; attend a Scoutmaster conference; plan, develop and lead a community service project and go in front of the Eagle Scout board of review.

Each scout took on a different project that helped the North County community. Owens built an information board for the old Cold Water school in the Hazelwood School District, and Butler built a picnic table for the Black Jack Fire Protection District.

For Feldmann, he decided to create a stone border for St. Ferdinand Church electronic sign, and he designed and organized the plants in the border, too.

“I was proud to be able to beautify my neighborhood parish grounds,” Feldmann said in a press release. “Even though I’m not a member of the parish, I have participated with the parish’s athletic association and have volunteered there for the past three years.”

The other students honored with the Eagle Scout honor, include:

  • Andrew Ford, a junior at Hazelwood Central High School from Troop 829
  • Nicolas Ford, a senior at Hazelwood Central High School from Troop 829
  • Cody Ford, a senior at Hazelwood Central High School from Troop 829
  • Brandon Goehri, a senior at Hazelwood Central High School from Troop 600
  • Brandon Marolt, a junior at Hazelwood Central High School from Troop 884
  • Joseph Radichel, a sophomore at Hazelwood Central High School from Troop 702
  • Eric Radichel, a freshman at Hazelwood Central High School from Troop 702
  • Rodrick Robins, a senior at Hazelwood Central High School from Troop 551
  • Nicholas Rosario, an eighth grader at Hazelwood North Middle School from Troop 551
Two million boys have achieved the Eagle Scout rank, according to the Boy Scouts of America website. In 2012, more than 57,900 earned the rank, which is 7 percent of boy scouts across the country.
