Joseph Kohnen Joins Hazelwood as a Firefighter and Paramedic

The Florissant resident was introduced at the March 20 Hazelwood City Council meeting.

Florissant resident Joseph Kohnen was recently welcomed into the Hazelwood Fire Department as the newest firefighter and paramedic.

Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Radel said Kohnen was hired on July 28, 2012 and completed his probationary period in January of this year, which makes him official to the Hazelwood family.

Kohnen is a longtime resident of North County.  Aside from living in the area now, he also grew up there. He is McCluer North High School alumni, and he completed the St. Louis County Fire Academy in December 2010.

"Joey got his start in emergency medicine as a first aide technician for the City of Florissant," Radel said of why he hired Kohnen. "He continued to advance in the field getting his state advanced life support paramedic license."

Radel said Kohnen went to work for a private ambulance service for two years after that. He also worked in the Berkeley Fire Department for one year.
