HSD Approves Budget for Several Hundred Teachers, Administrators to Attend Summer Institute

The board of education approved a contract with NCS Pearson for its annual summer professional development at Tuesday's meeting along with two other contracts.

Hazelwood School District (HSD) teachers and administrators will participate in a summer professional development to strengthen assessment literacy practices. The cost for the Assessment Literacy Summer Institute is $88,000.

The board of education approved a contract with NCS Pearson, which operates a contact center on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education, and according to the Office of Federal Contract Compliance holds more than $12 million in federal contracts to conduct education research.

The board of education also approved two small contracts that total a little more than $10,000.

HSD has hired Illini Environmental to handle chemical disposal related to high school construction. The estimated cost is $7,722

VideoSync has been hired to videotape the three high school graduations. That cost is $2,500.

Superintendent Grayling Tobias also gave his quarterly update at the meeting in which he emphasized HSD's continued focus on community relationships, staff professional development and student achievement. An added focus since December's Sandy Hook shootings includes school safety.

"Although we've done a lot, we realize there is still a lot of work to be done," he said. "We are going to continue to move forward doing what's best for our staff, parents and community in order for our students to be successful in school and in life."
