Hazelwood Stores Will Participate in Tax Free Weekend Aug. 3 - 5

The City of Hazelwood is partnering with the state of Missouri in its annual Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday weekend to help local families save money as they get ready for the school year.

As Hazelwood families prepare to send their kids in the next few weeks, the hopes its participation in a state-wide program will help local parents save some cash when it’s time to buy school supplies and clothes.

School supplies can get really expensive, as most parents know. A recent PriceGrabber survery found that most parents are budgeting $500 or more for back-to-school supplies this year for items ranging from school clothes to computers to pens and notebooks.

“Students who start school with the right tools usually perform better in the classroom,” said Hazelwood Mayor Matthew Robinson.

The city announced this week that it will partner with the state of Missouri in its annual Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday during the weekend of Aug. 3 – 5.

“With the sluggish economy and many people still out of work, we want to help parents stretch their spending dollars so they can afford to equip their kids with the supplies, clothes and electronics needed for the new school year,” Robinson said.

What You’ll Save

When you shop during the sales tax holiday, you can save more than you might expect.

“In addition to getting a break on the state sales tax (4.225%), consumers won’t be charged the 2.5% local sales tax, 1% tax for the Transportation Development District at St. Louis Mills, or the 1.7% sales tax for St. Louis County when they make back-to-school purchases at retail establishments in Hazelwood,” the city stated in a press release.

What You’ll Get

Whether you need to buy school supplies or not, the tax-free weekend can mean big discounts on certain items—and there are several that will be exempt from state and local sales taxes that weekend, including the following.

  • Clothing (any article having a taxable value of $100 or less)
  • School supplies (not to exceed $50 per purchase)
  • Personal computers (not to exceed $3,500)
  • Computer software (taxable value of $350 or less)
  • Computer peripheral devices (not to exceed $3,500)

Where to Shop

While you might expect stores like Wal-Mart and Target to have the best prices when it comes to school supplies, the city said that the best bargains can often be found away from the big-box stores.
