Hazelwood 2012 Election Guide

Be in the know on the candidates, incumbents and issues that will affect Hazelwood and St. Louis County.

As we close in on the August primary and look ahead to November’s elections, Hazelwood Patch is devoted to bringing the information needed to be in the know about every race in town. Here's our start on the candidates and issues we'll be covering as November draws near.

U.S. Senate

l's bid for re-election will be closely watched by the entire nation in part because of her close ties to President Obama's 2008 campaign. 

The fiercely-fought GOP primary will likely see (R-Wildwood), former of Frontenac businessman emerge as McCaskill's opponent.

The "Tea Party" movement will also be a factor in the campaign, with one activist's comments about drawing added scrutiny and security for McCaskill.

Congress

Redistricting brought on by the latest Census results has eliminated one of Missouri's congressional districts, to see who will represent the city of St. Louis and areas south, along with portions of St. Louis County stretching from the Florissant to Creve Coeur, and including the City of Hazelwood.

The primary winner will be an overwhelming favorite against either Robyn Hamlin or in November.

Missouri's new Second district is guaranteed to see someone new elected, with Rep. Akin's decision to run for the Senate. come into the fold to support her, enough so that it helped push Ed Martin to change races.

Wagner would face one of a field of largely-unknown Democrats, none of whom has attracted support from national party leaders. 

St. Louis County County 

Despite some controversy surrounding a recent personal finances, a bankruptcy and still being hired in a new position as the Maplewood License Office, Kathleen Burkett said she is filing for a third term.

Burkett was first elected to represent the citizens of the Second County Council District, which includes Hazelwood, in a 2002 special election. She was re-elected to a four-year term in 2008, serves as Vice-Chairman of the Council, and is the current the Chairman of the Revenue and Personnel Committee.

Maryland Heights resident Oren Walton, a Republican, will challenge Burkett to her seat.

Hazelwood State Representatives

Hazelwood has a couple races for state representatives.

For District 69, Rep. Margo McNeil has to wait until November for her big challenge and that's where her focus lies. Republican Glen Lindemann challenges her seat.

For District 70, Republicans Eugene Dokes and Tyler Holyfield will meet in the August primary. Whichever of the two is the victor there will meet Bill Otto in November.

State Senate (District 13)

With Sen. Tim Green being term limited this year,

Sen. Tim Green has put his support behind Walsh and serves as her treasurer for her campaign. 

Whoever wins the primary in August will move forward to face Republican Jacquelyn Thomas.

Lewis & Clark Township

Lewis & Clark Republican Committeeman David Blanke has one person filing to run against him, newcomer John Vahey. They will meet in August's primary.

The winner of that race will meet Lewis & Clark Democratic Committeeman Tim Jones in November.

Hazelwood City Councilwoman and current Lewis & Clark Democratic Committeewoman Carol Stroker will take on June Schmidt in November.

Issues

In August, voters will be asked to decide on a measure proposing "a constitutional amendment guaranteeing a citizen's right to pray and worship on public property and reaffirming a citizen's right to choose any or no religion," according to the state law calling for the vote.  earlier this year.

The fate of statewide ballot issues will not be decided until later this summer.

Voters in the St. Louis County Public Library system will be asked to vote on a measure which to fund improvements at facilities system-wide.
