Comparison: 2010-11 Hazelwood and Ferguson-Florissant School District Graduation Rates

Hazelwood West High School is the only in the district whose rate increased under the new formula. Here's a look at how area schools have stacked up with the new formula.

The U.S. Department of Education is now requiring districts and states to report the four-year graduation rate, which measures the percent of students who graduate in four years.

The four-year graduation rate is calculated differently than the way the state has calculated the rate in the past.

The old graduation rate was the number of graduates divided by the number of graduates plus the number of dropouts for that class.

Old rate: (Graduates / (9-12 Cohort Dropouts + Graduates)) x 100

Example: (209 graduates / 21 dropouts + 209 graduates) x 100 = 90.9%

The new rate includes the number of students who graduate in four years with a regular high school diploma, divided by the number of students who are in that cohort group.

New rate: (Cohort Graduates / (Total number of students in cohort-number of students who transfered out or dropped out)) x 100

Example: (202 graduates / (266-30)) x 100 = 85.6%
