Custodian Caught Cleaning Out Middle School Safe of Nearly $2,300, Police Say

The school resource officer installed a video camera at Hazelwood North Middle School, catching the theft on tape after officials noticed money disappearing over a two-month period.

A school custodian at Hazelwood North Middle School is accused of stealing $2,279 from a safe in the school’s office over a two-month period.

Stephen Anthony, 25, of the 100 block of Fermo Avenue in Ferguson, was charged May 7 with felony stealing.

School officials discovered numerous thefts from the safe in the middle school at 4420 Vaile Avenue beginning in December. A school resource officer installed a clandestine camera in the office to catch the thefts on video.

On Feb. 25, the camera recorded Anthony removing cash from the safe, St. Louis County Police said.

Anthony was arrested and confessed to stealing the cash on Feb. 25 and to a series of thefts over the school’s winter break, according to a court document. The total amount stolen was $2,279.

Bail was set at $10,000 for Anthony.
